Dan Hanzus hips us to the use of "tropes" while depicting "inevitable" minicamp story lines, I suppose.

I didn't even know what a trope is, but apparently it's just "a word or expression used in a figurative sense" according to Merriam-Webster.  The way that Hanzus of NFL.com uses the term kind of oozes with a bit of sarcasm, and is almost interchangeable with "B.S."  Anyway, two of our Panthers were mentioned in the piece (which, in its entirety, does depict a modicum of truth with the trite old expressions).

 

 

 

MIDDLING TEAM X WILL SHOCK THE WORLD

 

A personal favorite. An over-excited veteran -- his nostrils flush with pheromones of Optimism Season -- declares his team of misfits is about to put the NFL on notice.

 

This trope was perfected by Panthers offensive lineman Ryan Kalil, who in the summer of 2012 took out a full-page ad in The Charlotte Observer promising a Panthers Super Bowl win.

 

Carolina started the ensuing season by losing eight of their first 10 games.

  PLAYER X: I HAVEN'T BEEN THIS HEALTHY IN YEARS!

An off-shoot of the bulk up narrative, here the player with durability issues declares that his body has, at long last, been given the proper amount of rest time to fully rejuvenate itself. This story usually ends with Player X limping to the sideline after taking a helmet to the thigh on the first day of full-contact drills.

Actually, I should correct myself, for this year the hype seems to not be there. There haven't been grandiose declarations like in years past. Perhaps the team/media is finally starting to let the product speak for itself, instead of trying to upsell and convince the masses that they're actually good to generate buzz.
