comp picks?

By the way. Just talking about trades. I kind of scoffed when we gave away our Jon Beason 7th to snag Bene. Looking back, I'm glad we did.

After swapping fifth-round picks and trading their seventh-round choice to the Minnesota Vikings, the Panthers drafted San Jose State cornerback Bene' Benwikere in the fifth round with the 148th pick.

"We addressed our corner situation," said Gettleman, who believed the value that Benwikere presented made the trade worthwhile. "We discussed it at length and realized it was a great move. In fact, I got a text from a GM after we did it that said he thought it was a great move.

"He's got excellent ball skills, and he's very smart, which is important back there. You don't want people back there dropping coverages, plain and simple. We really like what Bene' brings. He's going to have an opportunity to compete at the nickel spot right off the bat."

The guy sounds like Nostradamus talking about a 5th round pick.

Edit: I'll add in he made this pick from his laptop at his kids Graduation!

What you have to understand is the NFL gives out 32 of them every year. That is he only number set in stone. Everything else changes year by year. It's hard to predict because player movement is so complex. There is no blueprint.

So the NFL gives them to who they would like to have them.  I know there is some kind of rational to the madness but it's something too hard for my miniscule mind to understand.  Thanks for explaining though.  I bet if you checked you'd find New England gets its fair share of compensatory picks.

I think the Panthers might even end up with a comp 3rd when all is said and done. the formula, as far as i know, is not made public, but it is based on salary given to players lost vs FA signings, and Carolina definitely had it tilted far to the lost side this season. wouldn't be surprised if it was a 3rd + another, based on anecdotal evidence of past seasons.

The 3rd round comp pick we got was for Peppers and his $90 million contract.  I don't think we will get a 3rd for anyone we lost.  But Mitchell signed for $25 million so a 4th would not be out of the question.  Harper and Decoud were both cut from their teams so they don't count for us.

    • I don't necessarily think he will be moved, I would currently be leaning against that notion. I think a lot will depend on the coaching situation. Carroll certainly can't be thinking about wanting to go through a serious strip down and overhaul, so the longer he plans to remain, the less likely I think Crosby gets moved.
    • I think everyone says Mike Evans because of size, but really they have different strengths and play styles.  Tmac is better on intermediate routes and not nearly as good at contested catches.
    • At this point, it is criminal to go into the 2026 training camp/OTA's with XL penciled in as a #2 WR. The team must upgrade, either through free agency or the draft. If he cannot give 100% effort on significantly less snaps as a #4-6 WR(players like Tremayne have done that consistently) then I don't think you have a player worth rostering beyond the trade deadline. Offensively, we eventually have to upgrade to an NFL starting caliber C. It's been almost the length of time from Gross to Ikey since Kalil retired and we have below average to terrible C play. Love Mays as a BC-esque utility backup but he will never be an above average long term starting C.  The TE room is one of the worst in the NFL but it's a low usage position in this offense, so the investments are likely to be small, if any. I would never expect to see an elite TE in a Dave Canales offense. 100% agree on OL depth. We actually aren't bad there but BC will be gone, Mays is a UFA, Corbett is a UFA and Zavala has been both injured and bad. We have to bolster that depth again or resign guys like Mays and Corbett to keep that depth somewhat stable.
