For Whom the "Bell" Tolls? Beware, the Bell might toll for us

SCP does a helluva job of putting this into perspective.  I mean, I think he is saying this (not putting words into his mouth): "If you want Bell gone because he sucks, you might be getting another team's Bell in return at a higher premium."  The OT market is terrible in free agency.  I am hoping DG can find a decent T (like Remmers) somewhere and draft one.  However,  SCP is describing the BEST candidates in free agency.  These are the expensive guys.

That's what I'm saying. One caveat, I believe that is the entire OT free agent list, or at least the one Walter Football feels are the best available.

Can still hope for a LT to be a cap casualty before March 10. One who's overpriced for his age, but still has 1 or 2 years left in the tank.

I mean we're talking about finding someone better than Byron fuging Bell. That's all we need to do at the moment at the very least.

How many UDFA does the NFL allow a team to sign out of college? 7? 8? 10? 20?

Whatever that number is, sign all OTs.  ONE OF THOSE players who started for years at their colleges will be fugging better than Byron Bell.

How do I know this? Cuz they can't be any worse.

I know you have an irrational hatred of Bell but it can always be worse. Chandler and Foucalt are proof of that. I would definitely bring in as much competition as possible. There's always a chance a late round pick or undrafted guy beats out Bell. But I wouldn't expect that to happen. Treat it as a pleasant surprise.

this is so drastically overblown. he's not good, everyone knows that but it's not like he is some revolving door where every DE/DT gets a clear shot at Cam every snap. That is basically what SCP is saying. does the cost of the supposed "upgrade" really worth the $ when in actuality the playing may be the same. Because looking at the list, they suck (just like Bell).

we know we need to upgrade, but there needs to be players available to upgrade, that might not be the case.

King Dunlap gave up three sacks and had only three penalties called on him on well over 1000 snaps last year.

Please, for gods sake, PLEASE don't tell me there's not a goddam difference between the names on that list and Byron Fugging Bell.

He's the chargers top priority, but if they let him walk that should be our first target. Roos another option if he doesn't hang it up

just like last off season, and through this entire season for that matter, I see a whole lotta bitching, but after 5 pages no one has offered up a legitimate alternative. cry fail all you want, but unless you can suggest a solution you're just whining.

I had a boss that always told people that came whining to him that "A complaint without a solution is just a bitch."

So yeah, if you don't have a solution...

To me, it really doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility that we should be able to upgrade from Bell. And I truly believe Gman realizes the need to do so. So...let's get this done.

Good, we need to convince him he's OUR top priority.

NFC South Champion two years in a row.

Up and coming QB who is mobile and if he *does* give up a QB pressure it doesn't automatically mean a sack.

We can offer him more than SD *plus* he won't have to pay California taxes (another virtual raise).

Convince him he has a better future and will more likely have near-term success in Charlotte, not SD.

"Golly, we just won't be able to find anybody, guess we'll have to threaten Cam's life with Fat Ass Dr. Molasses again!" is NOT satisfactory.

Does anyone know how many sacks Bell gave up and penalties called on him?

Seriously now, you could arrange all the FA tackles names on a dartboard, blindfold yourself, throw the dart over your shoulder while facing the other way, and the odds are probably 90%+ you would come up with a better option than Byron Bell.

He is what he is. Every year we wait to find a better option puts us a year behind in our search. Draft a young guy, let him develop behind almost any FA not named Bell, and in a couple of years, we'll be set.

    • I really think Bryce has been given so much time due to what they've put around him. In a vacuum, he hasn't been good enough. But I think we tend to be overly judgemental with him because he's our QB. Every fan base does it. You see every mistake, not just the highlights/lowlights. I've listened to Cowboys fans crap on Dak and Ravens fans crap on Lamar.  How many WRs from Bryce's rookie season are still making plays today? Probably a few starting olinemen from that year are out of the league too. Hell even his HC is out of the NFL and his OC is a TE coach right now. How many WRs from last season, Bryce's second year (other than the rookies) are making plays in the NFL today? And now in his third year, he's been passing to rookies and second year players. And the only one that was highly touted was TMac. Heck Coker wasn't even drafted, and he's easily been the second best receiver on the team. And let's not even get started on how bad the defense has been. When a team is constantly playing from behind, and/or being ran off the field (time of possession), it greatly impacts the offense's chemistry and playcalling. Look at the young QBs that are playing well right now. All of those teams have great defenses. Houston, Denver, Patriots, Cleveland, even the Saints defense has been on a bit of a tear recently.  I agree he needs to be more consistent. But to be fair, so does his supporting cast. He had some horrible fumbles early in the season. I beat him up over that just like everyone else. But we wouldn't have said that if it was Stafford. We would have rightly blamed it on the oline for allowing jail breaks when they weren't even outnumbered on blitzes, and to top it off he was throwing to a bunch of young receivers. He killed teams for blitzing him the end of last season. I don't think he forgot what to do. I think his receivers didn't know what to do. They were all young and new, other than XL, and DCs exploited that. The team is developing right now. And amazingly Bryce is playing better. Funny how that works. Let's just enjoy the ride and see where it takes us. Getting there is half the fun, and the team is actually ahead of schedule.
