he could also hold out and not sign his tender like peppers did which would mean we couldn't move him. did you consider that?

e: somebody who knows this stuff better please educate me. we can't trade him until he signs the tender but once he signs the tender can the tag be rescinded with no penalty? that doesn't sound right. if that's the case we'd be fuged either way.

You don't tender UFA.

Using hyperbole is such a lazy and largely meaningless way to debate.  I guess that just like this mentality of the "first person that breaks a news story is a great journalist" has basically turned into a circle jerk for message board members, the tool of using hyperbole as a means to bolster your message-board-amen-choir status is indicative of that same circle jerk mentality.

Unless Hardy is the greatest player to ever hit the field, then I'm pretty sure it's possible to replace him.

Hardy wasn't that great his rookie season, but who's to say our first round pick won't be a pass rusher that starts off quicker than Hardy did?

Who's to say Kony Ealy doesn't make a leap his second year? Plenty of players do.

Is Hardy good? Sure.

Is he easy to replace? No.

But is he impossible to replace?

No.

Who would replace him then? Currently he is impossible to replace

As Jeremy has said quite a few times in this thread, Voth has legit sources with the team. He definitely wouldn't come out and say 100% that Hardy wouldn't be back unless Ron or Gettleman told him so.

Doing so would put a major hit on everything he's built and is trying to build with Black and Blue.

Hardy not coming back has pretty much been set in stone since before last offseason even started.

The tag was a one year deal because they thought that they were a championship caliber team.

They've never really been fond of some of Hardy's off field actions.

Motorcycle incident, mannerisms, ext....

The DV issue and his actions after the DV issue set his fate in stone.

Because we don't throw huge money at time bombs that will likely be suspended for part of the year?

Funny, but I recall the team that won a championship just two years ago shipping a talented headache player to the Jets for pretty much nothing. And yet somehow they amazingly made it back to the championship.

Yep they dumped a high profile key cog to their defense. They can afford to win that way right? Dump their best defenders? Just keep going?

You don't dump Hardy and keep everything the same.

Add some legit secondary talent and this D can be better than the 2013 defense....

Plus Hardy's "style" made him likable....but he disappeared just as much as Peppers did and everyone LOVED to bash Pep for it. But Hardy wore face paint, was funny, and was a character....which is fun.

If Hardy is a important as some suggest our D would have been much worse in 2014. Especially late in the year. Is Hardy a good player? Yep. But all that matters is having a good team and we can do that without him

i'm talking about the concept of franchising him and trading him as so many have suggested in this topic. followed by, as proudiddy suggested, rescinding the tag if we need the cap space. i know you can't tender a UFA.

that argument didn't make sense to me because what i remembered from the peppers situation was that he held off from signing his tender which meant we couldn't trade him, and when he signed we already had the cap charge to deal with and were locked in and couldn't get out of it. we couldn't just rescind the tag and get the cap space back which would mean what proudiddy suggested wouldn't work.

it was like when leroy hill was tagged by the seahawks a few years ago: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81001a5c/article/seahawks-rescind-franchise-tag-on-hill-make-veteran-lb-a-free-agent they rescinded the tag because he refused to sign his tender so they got the cap space back. if he had signed his tender, they were locked in. it'd be like if we franchised hardy and he signed his tender but we couldn't find a trade partner. if we just cut him we would eat the cap charge for the tag-we couldn't just rescind it and walk away.

sorry my wife was watching this documentary about these crazy ass fan theories surrounding "the shining" and all the symbolism and poo in it so my brain is kind of fried

Hardy was also a vocal leader something Pep ran away from being. . But again it's OK we can move on.. But let's not act like it's a simple action. . And now we most definitely have another hole to fill..

    • As bad as AR has been, the Panthers would’ve been better off right now, if they had stayed at #9 in 2023 and picked him instead of doing what they did.  At least this way, they would’ve only wasted one draft pick vs what they gave up to pick BY. And they would have kept the #1 pick in the 2024 draft.
    • I felt pretty good about us making progress this season, surprising some people, and getting some more wins than last season going into it.  Now, after preseason, my expectations are much, much lower. I was talking with my friend who is a Bears fan, and we were discussing their drubbing of the Bills and how people try to dismiss it as “preseason, so it doesn’t count.”  It absolutely counts.  Not the wins or losses.  No one really cares about that.  But what the Bears are doing shows that even in a vanilla, non-specific scheme, they are executing at an elite level and they are disciplined.  It shows they are well coached.  They see growth in their players.  Versus us - hard to tell what we’re looking at because everything is a fuging mess.  In games we’re still undisciplined, be it penalties or assignments.  We do NOT execute.  We got random coaches calling plays that won’t be calling plays during the season, we have our players getting into fights in the last padded practice of the preseason, then we have Bryce and Chuba trying to correct it while our coach sat off to the side laughing.  To be clear, I like Canales.  He seems like a good dude.  But, it feels like we have very little direction and discipline.  You’re allowing a team who has been historically bad the last almost decade, with a losing culture that mostly bereft of talent to self-police?  You’re allowing subordinates to work in pet projects at the expense of getting valuable reps and evaluation of players in during games?     My friend literally brought up last night that when Ben Johnson got there he essentially put DJ Moore in notice because it was starting to be perceived that he was displaying some diva-behavior.  That’s leadership.  And they’re reaping the benefits early and setting a tone.  My friend said there is an excitement and confidence in and around their team that’s he’s never felt his entire life.  And here we are, sounding and looking like The Bad News Bears in our final week of training camp and preseason.  I literally stopped watching after halftime last week.  I used to watch every play faithfully, even in 2001 and 2010.  It was fun.  This isn’t.  We are bad and our administration keeps making bad decisions to compound things.  Reading poo like this today is just fuging deflating.
