The Panthers have signed free agent Michael Oher, a veteran offensive tackle with a Super Bowl ring and familiarity with the way Carolina likes to do things up front.

The 6-4, 315-pound Oher, a staple along the Baltimore Ravens offensive line for five seasons, signed a two-year contract. He spent 2014 with the Tennessee Titans and was released/failed physical last month.

 

Selected with the 23rd overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Ravens, Oher played his first two seasons under the tutelage John Matkso, who left Baltimore following the 2010 season to become Carolina's offensive line coach.

"He's a great coach," Oher said. "I learned a lot from him my first two years when he was in Baltimore, and the assistant that was with him in Baltimore carried his techniques on for a couple of more years.

"I'm excited to be back with him, working with him again. He knows how to teach football."

 

Oher joined the Titans as an unrestricted free agent last March. He started the first 11 games at right tackle before a toe injury ended his streak of 91 consecutive starts. After Oher sat out one game and was inactive for one, the Titans placed him on injured reserve.

 

And here's a quote that illustrates just how completely far off some folks are regarding the perception of the organization by free agents and draft picks...

 

"I'm excited to be joining an organization that knows how to win. They've won the past two division championships, and I'm excited to be a part of it," Oher said. "When I came here on a visit, the culture was great. They're very into winning and doing everything possible to win."

That's not how I remember it. Even before the movie I thought he was beasting it up. Then he just cliffed.

      We had a QB who could do that and its the last time we went to the Super Bowl and the only time we had an MVP. Once he lost his ability to do that he was out of the league. To filter out insignificant stats I will only look at QBs who have played in 10 or more games this year. There are 28 qualifying QBs. Bryce is 25th in Air Yards per Attempt at 6.4. Only Joe Flacco, Cam Ward, and Dillon Gabriel are worse (6.0, 5.8, 5.1). Trevor Lawrence, Patrick Mahomes, and CJ Stroud are the median QBs at 7.1. Drake Maye and Sam Darnold lead the league at 8.7. Bryce is 18th in the league for passes that travel 30+ yards at 12. The median is Caleb Williams at 15. The league leader is Matthew Stafford with 26. With passes that travel 40+ yards, Bryce is tied with three others at 21st in the league with 3. Only Jacoby Brissett, Cam Ward, Joe Flacco, and Dillon Gabriel are worse. The median is a three-way tie with Drake Maye, Trevor Lawrence, and Baker Mayfield with 6. The league leader is Sam Darnold with 12. Having the ability to complete passes down the field (not YAC) stretches the defense and makes them account for more ground. It keeps players out of the box and keeps formations in nickel or dime, less line backers for your RBs to worry about. Bryce is why we have 2 losses against the Saints. If he had the outright ability to sling the football down field we beat the easily, but he doesn't. So they crowded the box and our 2 starting caliber RBs with our top ~10 Oline couldn't carry the offense to a win on their own. The limitations of the offense fall squarely on Bryce.

      Bryce’s deep passes are intermediate passes for other strong armed QBs. I will say that Bryce’s accuracy on his deep passes have improved. Before they would just sail out of bounds. Now the WR actually has a fighting chance on the ball.
