The Panthers absolutely need to give Jake Long an offer

I think we can all agree that Jake Long was a great player.  He's not been healthy lately, and he's not a spring chicken of a lineman.  It could be that Jake Long thinks he should be paid like Jake Long four years ago..  He's going to need to prove that he's healthy AND that he can still play.

I'd love it if we took a good look at him, but if he doesn't pass the physical or expects premier money....  Well, we're not going to overpay someone who hasn't been healthy.

I could see Jake Long as a guy who will wait and see what happens before he makes a choice of where to go.  If he could be healthy and play at his high level prior to injury, every team in the NFL would love to have him.

I guess what it reminds me of most is when the Saints took a chance on Dan Morgan.

Unfortunately, it also reminds me of our deal with Chuck Smith.

Again, if we go this route, I'll be okay with it.  Hopeful that they would crank out a team friendly deal and check his health out thoroughly.

Here's what I'm wondering (assuming he doesn't retire)...

If Long is a low risk-high reward LT in an absolutely crap LT market this off season...wouldn't every GM in need of a LT come to the same conclusion and be obligated to bid up the market for him in order to get him to sign? Then all the sudden he's not really a low risk signing anymore. Sort of analogous to how mediocre QBs like Dalton or Kaepernick sign mega deals in today's NFL.

All this is a long way of saying that I know Gettleman isn't the type to throw money at a risky FA, but if we don't get end up signing Long, it'll be because some other GM is.

Okay, here's the deal.

Yes, Gman can act like a schoolgirl who has no date to the prom and look desperate, or, since the whole league knows we have OT needs, he can wait on the agent for Long to contact him, since we are the most logical place for his client.

This gives us a bit more leverage

Patience? get outta here with that poo!

This is 'merica, we spend money fast and go in debt round here!

The guy is worth taking a shot on. I get he's had injuries, but outside of last season, he's been fairly durable. He started 61 straight games in his first five seasons. Granted last season he got hurt and missed most of the season, but if he can overcome that injury, he's a four time pro bowl calibre left tackle. He's worth putting a deal on the table for if it's team friendly and relatively low risk.

Long on one knee is better than any current panther OT. With all the retiring going on( gamble miss that guy) I'm sure its in his head. Rehab is no joke, twice .....ugh.

If I'm him, 100% retire unless money is a issue which it shouldn't be. Really if he wants to keep playing, being a backup is less wear and tear. I mean look at cole and TD, injuries change your nfl age. Be a backup next year and then see if you're still in love. Most times egos will not allow that, but its his choice.
