Will our cap wealth next season change Gettleman?

As the saying goes, money changes people. For the last few seasons Gettleman has had peanuts to work with in terms of money. And because of this he has unfairly got this rep that he is super cheap and unwilling to pay for good players. Sure, now he says his philosphy is to add cheap, vet minium players on one year deals and not splurge on better players in FA.

But is there a chance all this will change once he actually gets his hands on all this newfound cap wealth he has never had before?

Sure, he might be thinking to himself now that his philosphy will remain the same. But dont a lot of people say if they came into a ton of money they would still be the same and still drive the same beater cars, then next thing you know it, one month later after coming into money, you suddenly see a Bentley in the drive way.

Now ofcourse I dont expect him to just go out and sign a FA to a Suh like contract on day 1 of FA, however I do think signing a Torrey Smith of next season (whoever that might be) isnt unreasonable to think. I know I have discussed the actual numbers, but just a refresher. We are projected to have 71 million in cap space next season. To put that into perspective, we could afford to lock up both Cam and Luke, set money aside we need for rookies we draft and still have about $30 million left in cap space after all that. In other words, a fug ton of cap space.

Star wont be coming due for a contract for another two seasons and Benjamin 3 more seasons to go before his comtract comes up. So say we land a Torrey Smith like player at 9 million a year, that will still leave us with about $21 million in cap space.

Let that sink in for a minute.. Next season we can lock up Cam, Luke, set aside the money we need for our rookie class AND sign a Torrey Smith level FA and still have $19-$20 million left in cap space.

So the question remains, will coming into all this cap wealth change Gettleman when he actually has his hands on all this money? Its easy for the poor and middle class to say things like "money doesnt buy happiness" or " more to life then money." Until they actually come into money that is.

I don't think so.   Gman is going to have his hands full paying Cam, Luke, Stah and Short and KB not too long after that.  Not to mention Norman and a couple others.

He's smart.  I highly doubt he is going to ruin his plan once he has the cap the way he wants it.

I believe we may, now and then, go after a top flight free agent but I seriously doubt he is going to break the bank for one or players.

If your calculations are correct, then the money for players like kelvin, star, kawann should be set aside for them as they maintain their level of play then your looking at around 20 million spent (maybe more or less for those guys).Add in your "torrey smith" type signing and add another 7-9 mill depending on who it is. Your sitting at 10-15 left so, I don't think its out of the question for him to consider a player of that caliber.

Although, I hope we can fill those positions through the draft because quality, youthful players are priceless in this league. And all of this is basically estimates of their yearly salaries combined, it could change based on the length of the contract. And the value of the player his self.

He's more than likely going to extend players like Norman within the next couple of years and then spend the rest of the cap space on mid tier guys with potential while building through the draft.

We have a lot of players we need to keep on the books. Cam, Star, Luke, Short, Norman, KB, Trai, Bene, etc.

I'm pretty sure those are our main priorities along with the draft. I just don't see us going after any real big names in the near future.

Thanks for posting, I was waiting by the computer days for another thread of yours.

Why do you talk chit about almost everyone who starts a thread? The dude has some good thoughts.. Same tired ole chit.

Anyway,

Either way you spin it he is going to have to spend some money to retain the core players that will soon have their hands out so I think, I know he understands it.. I have faith!

    • The problem that Bryce faces is his lack of prototypical tools.  He's not the tall, strong armed mobile QB that tends to get drafted first overall.  His game is not played in underwear on a practice field.  His best asset are his intangibles.  They aren't sexy like a cannon arm or a fast 40 yard dash. OK, so we took the lesser athlete.  Bryce put up a pretty bad season with a bad team around him.  The coaching staff, for all it's platitudes, sucked.  They made sure Bryce could run a huddle, but didn't help him get better as a player.  Bad choice. Compare that to what other teams did to their Rookies:  they put them in position to succeed with better personnel and better play calling.  Sure, there are physical differences which are going to affect the outcomes, but you can't change it. Am I trying to ride to the defense of Bryce?  Only a little.  He's my favorite team's QB, and I believe in him.  Now, he's got this year to show that he's "the No. 1 for a reason" (Thanks CJ Stroud).  Will he, won't he?  I don't know at all.  That's on the D&D crew to put Bryce is position to play well.  Running the ball is going to make things a lot easier for Bryce.  Does that discount his success if he plays well?  For some of y'all it will.  Some of y'all just don't like Bryce, like he stole you DoorDash or something. Regardless, let's see what happens in 2024.  If Bryce stinks it up, then we're going back to the QB well again.
    • we may think we know, but we don't know. we won't know what effect upgrades on the OL, coaching staff, and WR room will have. we don't know what scheme canales is going to put together. we don't know a lot of things.  that's why we play the games...to see what shakes out. plenty of reasons to think Bryce is limited this year...again. Plenty of reasons to see an improvement in his play.
    • He did not elevate the players around him, but they de-elevated their QB.  A QB like Bryce needs a system, a strong OL, a Running game, and WRs that can get open.  Call him a manager at best, but so is a point guard.  That is all we should need.  He is smart enough to grow into a very effective player.  I once saw a Coach talking about the OL--i forget who it was Schottenheimer comes to mind--and he said, you can succeed if you have one weak link on the OL.  If you get 2 weak links, success comes 10x harder.  If you get three weak links, your season is over.  Your QB is injured, and you are unemployed (paraphrasing).  I would say that we had 4 weak links (Icky does not get a pass) and a RB who was not good at pass blocking. I am not saying the Bryce is the answer at QB--but I am saying we don't know yet. I know QBs (college) and when the OL sucks, they collapse mentally over time.  That is what we saw--a QB who had never played without the advantage.
