With the 7th round winding down, and only one pick left from NFC South teams, I think it's safe to go ahead and discuss who we thought was successful, and who we thought failed.

 

I thought all 4 of the NFC South teams had solid drafts this year. Even though the Panthers didn't move up and get a potential LT in Humphries, I still think we got value according to our board, and I trust our scouts. I probably would have felt it was a bit of a failure had we not gotten Darryl Williams in the 4th, and the 5th round LB was a bit of a head scratcher, so for those reasons I would say we had the second best draft in the NFC South.

 

The Buccaneers are my draft winners of the South this year. Jameis Winston was a no-brainer, and I guess your opinion of their draft will depend whether you think he is a franchise QB or not. I think he is, but I'm hopeful Lovie Smith will prove just as inept with him as he has with past QBs. Aside from Winston, I thought the Bucs did a good job setting him up for success with back-to-back O-lineman in the 2nd round, and then they went out and got my favorite mid-round LB in Kwon Alexander in the 4th-who should be a great pairing with Lavonte David. With David and Alexander, the Bucs have the same type of flexibility that the Panthers got by pairing Shaq Thompson with Thomas Davis. Not sure where their WRs fit on their depth chart behind Jackson and Evans, but it appears Winston is set up for success as long as the coaches (and crab legs) don't get in his way.

 

I think the Falcons made a no-brainer decision to draft Beasley, but still didn't add quite enough to their pass rush. Jalen Collins is a boom or bust pick, but was a decent value at that spot to pair alongside Trufant, and Justin Hardy was a very solid selection in the 4th. All-in-all, they got better, but are still weak in the trenches.

 

The Saints were my losers of the South. Andrus Peat could be a solid selection, but after him they basically spent their whole draft giving their LBs a makeover, and the Grayson pick was a luxury they couldn't afford in the 3rd.

 

Of course, I could be way way off.

Honestly I think all 4 teams did well, the Panthers did the worst. 

 

Tampa has weapons and offensive lineman.

 

The Saints got better on the oline and got an infusion of defensive talent. 

 

The Falcons got a pass rusher, stud RB, Slot receiver, and Jaelin Collins is a big corner to deal with our twin towers and the Tampa towers.

Well, the Saints are garbage so an F for them.

The Falcons are also trash personified so, F for them as well.

Tampa Bay tried really hard but Tampa gonna Tampa. F city.

Carolina showed why they won B2B division crowns, savvy GM. A+++

I just keep imagining if the Falcons had drafted Odighizuwa in the third to pair up with Beasley. So glad they left him on the board, they would have fixed their entire problem in one draft.

Panthers Bucs ATL and NO.

I think the Panthers when its all said and done added just the right players to push then over SEA. The rest of the Div drafted well but they all have a long way to go to catch up.

      Either way there's some tough teams on the schedule this year, on paper anyways.

      Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.

      Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
