Cam Newton Agrees to 5 year contract extension worth 103 million.

So how does this affect our cap space THIS yr. He already counts for almost 15M. If he gets 20m a yr that includes this yr. Where is that extra 5 coming from or is the cap hit and not the actual money backloaded?

i think its gonna be less than that THIS year. usually the cap hits are larger in the latter years. this makes sense because you expect him to progress later on in the contract.

you are paying cam for what he is and what you expect him to become. If gettle is paying him over 100 mill. He expects him to be a top 10 top 5 qb by the last few years of his contract. Then you give him another extension.

this is how it's done boys. and we may have saved a good bit of money signing him now instead of letting him play out his 5th year option healthy and with more weapons then he has ever had.

The contract iirc should kick it's 1st year into gear after this one ends. So he'll play out the 5th year option, then the contract takes affect in the space that would have been the open year.

Which iirc is why they call it an extension. I'm not a guru, but that is how I understand it.

This is basically an Aceboogie thread. Thanks. Anyone who thought there was never a possibility Cam would leave is just dumb. When Gettleman got his head out of his ass he paid up, simple as that.

Waiting to see how a previously injured player looks in OTA's before writing a 100 million dollar check when there is no downside to waiting is hardly keeping his head in his ass. Its good business.

Marty Hurney says Cam Newton is close to a long term deal with the Panthers on his AM radio show.

Really hope the team makes a good decision on this one. Looks like we will be the team to figure out whether these mobile QB's have a life cycle more like other QB's, or like RB's. If it's the latter, there's financial trouble ahead.

Here's to hoping that the 2020 Panthers don't have a QB on the roster with a higher salary than the one starting.
