How the Panthers spend: Defensive tackles

Captain Morgan

Recommended Posts

Consider: Tampa Bay tackle Gerald McCoy counts $14.5 million against the cap. That Carolina has only half of that tied up in seven players -- and only four likely will make the 53-man roster -- for a defensive front that ranks among the best in the NFL is a bargain. Re-signing veterans Edwards and Cole for relatively low numbers to rotate with Lotulelei and Short was key.

I hope cole and edwards still have something left on the tank

DT is high on our list of draft needs this year because Star and KK are gonna get paid and

Cole and Edwards are at the end of their careers.  I think Dwan has one good year left in him, don't know about Cole.

I'm hoping for a LT, DT and DE in the first 3 rounds for next year.

cam's cap-friendly deal and something fair for luke, along with clearing CJ's cap hit and getting out under the last of the hurney albatrosses, will leave plenty of room for deals for these guys. unless one of them decides to get greedy and hold out i don't see any way either of them leave.

yeah I could easily see a double dip if the right players are there.  Getty wants the DL to be elite.

A second and a third round DT would give us another 5 years of rooking contracts.

and I have to choose I actually KK over Star, but my opinion could change if Star explodes next year.

I just think it's harder to find pass rushing DT's instead of run cloggers.

who do you pick if you have to choose between Star and KK to pay?

it's a tough question.

Star is a rare talent but KK is becoming a dominating pass rushing force and we will need that more in my opinion. Especially since Hardy is not here and we need the pass rush slack to be picked up. We also have a history of finding suitable NT on the cheap with veteran FA.

We're taking a DT early next year. We have to. And they might just replace Star or KK eventually. Y'all thought I was crazy for saying so like a month ago.

I bet $5 we take a NT in the first 2 rounds next draft. No more no less because I'm a cheap ass.

But damn it I want them both here for the long haul. They are both probowl caliber players. We also need to think about replacing the depth behind them though. Cole and Edwards are getting long in the tooth.

Man that's a tough decision.  Gonna cut off one of your hands you choose.

Hopefully some Gettlemagic and some timely negotiations will come into play.  Pass rushing DT's are more valuable on the open market, but a NT that commands double teams to keep bodies off Kuechly and the LB's is imperative as well.

Hopefully we can work something out to keep both.

    • Maybe a bit of a homer take but I can't give us a grade lower than A.   Freeling was arguably the best LT prospect in the draft.  His athletic ability is off the chart and at 6'7" that can move.  It was a no brainer pick.   Hunter's key word is Violence. Putting him next to Brown should scare an offensive coordinator. These two give Scourton and Phillips plenty of chances to get one on one opportunities. Brazzell, another tall receiver with sprinter speed.  Our WR room is filled with tall talented WR.  Brazzell is going to give us a WR that can take to roof off the defense.  Basically Jimmy Horn with size. W. Lee III has a nickname of the Blanket. (heard this on the Beleav podcast with J. Stewart)  What a great name.  A great value in the 5th round. Hecht A strong, fast and extremely smart center. Many had him listed as the best center in the draft.  He's most likely a starter sooner than later. Wheatley A good safety in round 5.  Someone who could see playing time.   Kuwatch  I love this pick.  At minimum he will be a key piece on special teams and with some good coaching he'll see some packages where he'll play.  His down piece is he doesn't stay up in the running game.  Good coaching will fix this.  He reminds me a bit of A.J. Klein.   All these picks were great value.  I believe everyone of them were graded higher than the pick we took them.   Dan Morgan is IMO doing a great job turning this team into a good team with great depth.
    • Moton is a class act.
    • Sure, that is possible. That’s what, an extra 55 yards a game on average and 7 more TDs? What if he’s just 15th?  I imagine they would extend him in that situation due to the belief that he’ll keep trending up. maybe a 3 year contract to prove he can be top 10? Sounds like a Tepper plan.
