How the Panthers spend: Defensive tackles

Captain Morgan

Recommended Posts

I've been wanting a couple backups in later rounds, along with someone to groom to take over for Kalil, but agreed.  No reason it has to be higher round guys when likely it's not going to be a possibility.  That, and the last time we drafted for need at DT before Star and Kawann we got McClain and Fua.  Do you guys really want to relive that?

You mean when all time greats Beanie Wells and Kevin Smith were running up and down the field on us? When you could pencil Michael Turner for 130 + yards?  Hmm.. let me think about it.....

We will keep both Kk@Star but the next draft will fill in our backups' Dwan will be back a extra year so we Will draft at least 1 DT to take Cole place for the future in the second round' we will have 2 pics in the Second round believe me!! If Kurt Coleman works out at Safety we want draft that position' So our draft will look like this OT or DT depends on how Oher and Martin play out' the OT will be needed immediately if picked in the first but if a DT is chosen he will become true back up for years to come to stay fresh most likely Versitile" (DE/DT) So he can also patch up for the Hardy lose too* Second round most likely the same either or depends on what happens in the first!! Then with then extra 3rd round pic we will move up and take the best available player in the 2nd again most likely a double-dip.. at either OT or DT

I try not to remember that era or the Jimmy Clausen abortion.  Since defensive tackles are my favorite position, I'm kind of biased towards at least competency and it's nice to have a couple bookends.  I sure the hell don't miss Forever Useless Atrocity by any means!

I'd like to suggest playing around with the formatting of this post so it reads a little easier.

christ people, we just drafted two defensive tackles.

in 2013.

it's only 2015. we are not drafting more defensive tackles next year, not high-round ones, not to replace star and kk. i don't understand how the which-one-of-them-is-sure-to-go?! clucking has spread so memetically around here in the past couple of months.

I agree that we would not replace Star and KK at this stage.

But I have no doubt that if the BPA when our pick comes up is a defensive tackle, there is a pretty good chance we would take him.

DT is high on our list of draft needs this year because Star and KK are gonna get paid and

Cole and Edwards are at the end of their careers.  I think Dwan has one good year left in him, don't know about Cole.

I'm hoping for a LT, DT and DE in the first 3 rounds for next year.

I guess one day we'll begin to draft a quality tackle

    • Damn I liked A'Shawn too. This is basically a heads up we're planning on cutting you move.  Robinson wasn't the best but I loved his attitude and effort on the field. He held that entire dline together when Brown went down iirc..granted we finished that season as the worst rushing defense in modern NFL history.  If Wharton would have performed up to atleast half of his salary last season, I'd feel a little better about it. We do need that cap space though.
    • 13. Carolina is coming. The Panthers are well thought of around the league. Their "process" seems sound. I think their off-season will be very interesting to keep an eye on. They made the playoffs, but they're not yet knocking on the door. (Offense was 26th in EPA/play.) I think it's imperative they don't overestimate where they are in their build. They can't throw a ton of money around in FA to "make a run now". They need to be intentional about building a solid foundation. (IMO) And from what I know about the team... I think they will be. Sidenote: I have my eye on offense there, not defense. They HAVE to leave next season with a strong opinion on Bryce Young. They need to put pieces around him to do that. Can't be left wondering what he would have looked like with "better OL play" or "more pass catchers". They have to know. (That part is purely my opinion. No one told me that.) https://x.com/lindsay_rhodes/status/2027212533417869499?s=46&t=xeIgh_-Vr2aKxBkBJdfnKA
    • Because this DL is completely reliant on Brown being available and being a stud. Without him we were the worst D in history. The Wharton signing last year reeked of desperation. He just isn't a great fit for us schematically and I think we panicked a little bit when we missed out on Milton Williams who would have been a great fit.
