Shaq Thompson Catching On

Shaq Thompson today intercepted his first pass in training camp. During an end zone drill play,Thompson read the play and reacted. The result was a Derek Anderson interception and room to run. 

 

 

Thompson also made a nice play on a Cam Newton scramble at the end of practice. Thompson stayed home and kept in position to make the tackle if needed. Keeping more mobile QBs at bay could fall under Thompson's jurisdiction throughout the season. His speed and agility would be an ideal fit for the QB spy position.

It wouldn't surprise me if Shaq played a similar role to what TD played as a rookie.  TD wasn't really a LB and wasn't really a safety as a rookie.  He was pretty much put out there and told to be an athlete and make plays.  He spied mobile QBs (Vick) and was just generally unleashed to cause a ruckus.

AJ Klein's inability to pick the right gap on backside run support is a major liability.  We ran more nickel last year than ever, simply because our gap assignments couldn't be depended on.  Hopefully Shaq at WLB is the remedy to that problem.

I think it was more about being unable to match up from a team speed perspective than it was about gap assignment when it comes to why we ran so much nickel last season.  Klein stuck covering a slot receiver or speedy TE?  Yikes.

agreed. Only caveat is that the coaching staff was indecisive on whether TD was a Safety or LB (my recollection and may be wrong). I think this may have initially slowed TDs learning curve a bit. Sounds like RR is firm in Shaqs role as a LB which should help.

Davis was draft to be a linebacker. Due to preseason injury at the safety position, he was tried there for a short time.
