Panthers - Bills previews & predictions roundup

Thanks for the link @Jackofalltrades.  I had to laugh at the Bills fan who wrote this:

"They're an interesting team, the Panthers...really strong on defense, decent offensive weapons, bad oline recently, lose a few games they should win..I call 'em Buffalo South. Should be a good preseason game to watch when the 1s are going at it."

That's all true, but we're not QUITE Buffalo South - we have a franchise QB!  Minor point, LOL

Also, since I don't follow the Bills much at all, I was interested to discover their name for their DLine.  Pretty cool nickname "the cold front"  Now we just have to melt that D with some Carolina heat on offense.  I agree it should be an interesting matchup with two strong Ds

Here's another betting site with a pretty good preview of the matchup:

I was surprised re: their comments that Shaq and KK won't play.  I didn't think that had been determined or announced yet.  Anyone here have news/confirmation?

ODDS

The Buffalo Bills opened a 3-point favorite with a total of 35.5, and the numbers are holding steady.

QUARTERBACK ROTATION

Veteran Matt Cassel was announced as the starting QB for Friday’s preseason opener and the Bills have one of the few starting QB battles in training camp. On Monday’s team depth chart, all three quarterbacks were listed equally as the starter. So EJ Manual and Tyrod Taylor will also be given plenty of opportunity to show their skills with Taylor likely getting a longer look in this contest.

Recall Manual was 9/13 for 96 yards in last year’s preseason game against the Panthers. The Bills should give each QB a solid shot to impress in the passing game, but make no mistake this will be a run-first scheme.

The Panthers will likely sit QB Cam Newton or he’ll play a series at most. Veteran Derek Anderson follows with Joe Webb likely to see the most action. Webb went 16/28 for 180 yards against the Bills in last year’s preseason opener with a TD and interception.

Webb is a big, strong mobile QB who can have lots of success against the backups.

POSITION BATTLE TO WATCH

The Bills starting right tackle position battle should see both players getting plenty of reps. Second-year OL Seantrel Henderson is a monster of a man and was the No. 1 overall recruit in the country coming out of high school. Cyrus Kouandjio was the higher draft pick last year.

“Cyrus had a little setback with missing a day and things, but Seantrel has really been going like this and again, there’s competition there,” said Ryan. “But Seantrel’s really doing a nice job.”

After WR Kelvin Benjamin, the other starting WR spot is open with Jerricho Cotchery, Devin Funchess and last year’s undrafted surprise Corey Brown.

INJURIES

Bills RB Bobby Dixon was a dependable backup last season but won’t see the field for at least a month due to a recent calf injury.

Bills WR Sammy Watkins won’t play as he’s nicked up and sore.

Panthers first round pick LB Shaq Thompson won’t play due to a hamstring injury. Defensive tackle Kawann Short returned to practice but won’t play because of back spasms.

I think many people will be surprised by how well our starting o-line will play. I'll admit that Oher is a ? at LT, but he is the only unknown and I really think he's going to be average at the very least

Opposing fans are going to be sorely disappointed if they are believing the medias narrative that our o-line will be the same trainwreck we had sstarting last season
