Moving away from the read-option

If the OL is better - which I believe it is - and the backfield is better - which I believe it is minus Williams / plus a healthy Stewart and the new additions - then I believe a traditional Coryell style power run attack can work.

Mind you, don't take that to mean I have confidence in Shula, but I much prefer the scheme.

I don't mind the scheme...

I just want to see them actually run the football without Cam's help before I buy into it working

Rivera was saying that they were not going to revert to the read option as the solution to KB being gone. That is a far cry from saying we aren't going to use it just like we have under Shula for the past 2 years. Cam is a weapon because he can pass and run as well which makes him a double threat. If we wanted a pure pocket passer we would name Anderson the starter, who is arguably a better pocket passer than Cam. But Anderson isn't the athlete that Cam is and he doesn't force defenses to play contain as well as try and rush the passer. What Anderson does do is read defenses better and know where he needs to throw the ball. Cam is still learning to read defenses and make the right throw without thinking about it or holding onto the ball.  But to not use the read option or to limit Cam to only being a pocket passer would be taking away the things that make him unique. And limiting his value to the team.

First team offense is averaging about 2.8 yards per carry by RBs this preseason to date.

a number greatly inflated by one 29 yard run.  Literally every other time is 1 yard or negative almost.  Not sure how coaches can be confident yet....hope we see something Friday.

OL may be doing well pass blocking but that isn't what they will be asked of....not sure we can be confident we can run without Cam helping create lanes by the zone read

why risk injury just to make fans more comfortable.

I you don't believ that Stew can run, you never will.

Now this news really makes me laugh. So we're not going to use it more than we have in the past? We used it a lot in the past. We're going to use it a lot this season in my opinion.

RR doesn't have any obligation to tell the media our strategic plans for the upcoming season. He has to do these vague interviews and he has to say words. That's it. Doesn't have to be true when it comes to the plays we're going to run, or in what proportion.

RR and his coaching staff want to keep their jobs. Millions are on the line, and jobs are scarce. The read option can help them to stay employed. Cam in the pocket with Corey and Cotchery? They'll be fired starting with Shula, and RR will go on the hot seat. Get ready for heavy read option, or new coaches.

A member of the media asked a standard question regarding if they were going to make up for missing KB by using more option. He said no and it would not be used more than in the past. I see nothing that suggests they are continuing any trend or using it less. Rivera said nothing about that in the linked article. They arent going to say a word about their strategy. I agree.

Yeah we'll find out soon enough when the regular season gets underway. If I were coaching the team I'd be using our gigantic QB for rushing yardage with the read option a lot to make up for what is likely to be a weak passing attack. Cam is thrilling to watch when he takes off, and that would keep us in games and the stadium full of Panthers fans.

AND if I was coaching the team, I wouldn't answer any questions with any information that in any way may benefit our opponents at any time.  o_O

Jeremy needs to offer a class on coachspeak. Many on here would benefit greatly from taking it.
