Praise for Cam

Lots of media folks taking note of Cam's performance with a limited supporting cast this week:

Jason La Canfora

I don't think I could come up with three more appropriate MVP candidates than Cam Netwon for the month of September. He just keeps willing his team to wins and making things happen. His ability to spin away from the rush and extend plays is utterly maddening for defenses and he was stellar again Sunday. He looks like a quarterback about to step into real greatness. I have long admired his game and I love the way he is playing this season.

Brady, Dalton & Julio have been great so far...but the MVP three games into the NFL season is Cam Newton.

Pete Prisco

Cam Newton is playing some great football right now. He threw for 315 yards and ran for a touchdown to lead the Panthers to a 27-22 victory over the Saints to get Carolina to 3-0. Newton has little help from his supporting cast on offense, especially the outside receivers, but he's been carrying this team. Newton has matured as a passer and he's still a threat to run the football. That makes teams account for him as a runner, which helps open up the passing game. He is in the early MVP conversation. He hit tight end Greg Olsen 11 times for 134 yards and two scores, which is impressive when you consider he has little else in terms of weapons. Newton seems to really have matured off the field, but also on it.

I posted the following in the Stats & Analysis thread, but it's relevant here, so please forgive me for the repost.

***

I took a bit of time to look closely at Cam's stats side by side for each of the 3 games.

It's great to see his yards going up every week, as well as the yards/completion.   It's pretty startling to realize Cam had exactly the same number of attempts yesterday as in week 1 against JAX, and only 2 more completions, but an 80% increase in passing yards.   Those deep balls are doing wonders.  And obviously, putting the fear of the deep ball into opposing defenses can only help open up other possibilities for our offense, including the run game.

Cam is playing out of his mind right now, he's playing smart, and he definitely is in the MVP conversation.  That said, I think it's worth noting that Ginn is really flourishing in the offense once again with Cam.  Cam loves Ginn as a weapon, hell, he is on pace for over 900 yards and if he corrects some of the drops he's had, that could be over 1000.  We wanted someone to step up as Cam's #1 target, and as much as we thought Philly Brown, Kevin Norwood, or Devin Funchess would or could be that guy, that guy has turned out to be Ginn.  It'll be interesting to see if defenses start to respect Ginn and roll coverage or even (dare I say) take that 8th man out of the box and keep an extra defender in coverage because of him.

This is how those in the media that unfairly criticized Cam justify giving him credit now without eating crow.

The fact that Ginn has become our #1 is proof enough Cam should be an early MVP candidate with how he has played.

I am a big fan of Ginn, but if he is our #1 receiver our WR group is not good.

I've been very much impressed with Newton. You can certainly tell that he has taken the task of refining his skills during the offseason seriously.

Certain fans here have talked about how Newton should elevate the players around him, well he has, and he is.

I can't help but notice how quiet some of the few posters left around here who go out of their way to critique Cam have been these last 3 weeks.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
