Rivera presser: Jared Allen injured, on Delaire, Shaq, bye week schedule

Black and Blue Review provides the transcript of today's press conference with Rivera.

Some interesting points to note:

Jared Allen suffered a pinched nerve at some point and it may have contributed to him looking slow on some plays.

The only real thing that came up and I didn’t catch it until later in the fourth quarter was Jared [Allen] had that pinched nerve. Apparently he did it early on, so they’re getting him checked out right now. That’s the only one that’s of concern. The nice thing is that we have two weeks to get ready.”

On Ryan Delaire:

“Our college scouts brought Ryan to [defensive line coach [Eric Washington’s] attention during the draft and looked at a lot of tape during the draft and liked him and we had a good grade on him. We just didn’t have any late picks.

On Shaq's play Sunday:

I thought he did a good job in coverage and dropped with good zone awareness. His breaks on a lot of plays, he’s very physical and that’s been a big plus. One thing is that we’re not afraid to play young guys here, which we’ve done since I’ve been here.

On changing the practice routine on the bye week:

We looked at a lot of things that teams throughout the league are trying and we’re going to give guys an extra day off. We’re going to give them Monday off then come back and go Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and do all preparation on those three days. Then Friday will be a recovery day that a lot of people are trying. And not just because of coming off the bye, as we look forward, it’s something we may do on a permanent basis

A couple of things have really impressed me about Allen:

1) He didn't make any excuses for less than stellar play, he admitted he would have liked to have had a special game for his 1st with a new squad, but didn't blame injury.  Instead he gave huge props to Delaire and others on the team for their great play.

2) I loved his comment about taking "good care" of Jordan Gross' # 69 until they retire it for him....

He seems like a great team player.  Hopefully too he's still got plenty left and will ball out in future games.

I can speak from experience.....pinched nerves are very painful.  I hope they can treat it and give Allen some relief because the Panthers are going to need him in Seattle, and in a big way.

they're more weird than painful. I got one in my neck andevery once in a while I'll get. What feels like, a shock going down my arm followed by a numbness.

Just depends on which nerve is pinched, I guess. Could causes paralysis if it's in a bad spot though, so that has to be taken into consideration.

Hopefully it's just a stinger and not in his neck.

Wait,  so Jared Allen played through pain with no complaint and is later chastised by fans.

sounds right.

I created that thread at halftime.

my eyes were right but I'm "glad" to know it was injury related and not because of effort.

hope he's ok and can provide us with some good play.

    • Gustavsson would be insane. I think we would have to break the bank to afford that move. Which, I don't think is necessarily a bad idea. Ultimately, Freddie isn't likely to be around more than a couple of seasons more. We can all agree that unless they have a fleet of sports psychologists working on Kochetkov, he will never be capable of getting his head on straight enough to compete.
    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
