How many missed sacks does Kony Ealy have?

Not if history or common sense is any indication.

Player   Rookie   Year 2   Year 3    Year 4
CJ             0           6           4            11.5
Hardy        3           4           11          15
Ealy           4           0(X)       ?             ?

Yea they will draft the replacement for a guy who had more sacks than CJ or Hardy in their first season and CJ/Hardy didn't really come into their own until year 3/4. They may very well draft another DE in round 1 or 2 but it won't be to replace Ealy...especially not on early downs.

And I'm not even the biggest Ealy fan but facts is facts.

Terrible comparisons

Ealy was a second round pick who has gotten a ton a playing time. CJ and Hardy were 3rd and 6th round picks who needed to fight there way up the depth chart. I would bet anything Hardy and CJ were productive per snap than Ealy

You win football games by stopping the run.

When a team is forced to throw the football more than they like thats when the take aways happen...

I think kony is doing his job, combine that with the other 10 on defence doing their jobs you get 4-0 starts.

stopping the run? this isn't the 1960's. Every team now has become pass crazy.

And Ealy is probably the last reason we are 4-0,  our secondary has out performed the D-line thoroughly. If anything Ealy almost lost us a game

It's only a terrible comparison if you're an idiot.

Hardy had a first round grade and only slid due to character concerns...that's pretty well documented he even talks about it himself.

3rd round is soooo fugin much different than a 2nd right..no.

Also if you did this around the league for other teams DL you'd see much of the same...but keep on with that...you'll get far around here.

Holy fugin poo this guy is so smart.

We should have drafted one of these guys they are killing it instead of Ealy.(4 DE that went BEFORE Ealy)

http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/16707/dee-ford  (converted to LB)

And 4 DEs that went AFTER Ealy

Clearly all the 1st-4th DEs from Ealy's draft are killing it already with sacks right....fugin HERP gtfo

I don't hate Ealy, but he is behind where he should be at this point.  2 solo tackles through 4 games, thats not the greatest thing ever for a guy who's claim to fame is stopping the run.  Last week we gave up 100+ yards to Doug freaking Martin.  Again, I've said many times, if Ealy turns this around and becomes a flippin machine for us, great, but at some point, we need a game like what we saw from delaire to give us all hope for the future.  I said before, but for every CJ or Peppers that comes into the league, there's 4-5 Everett Browns.  DE's bust hard, and I feel like Ealy could be doing just that.

Some of you guys play too much fantasy football.

Ealy again is one of our best best run defenders on defense. After losing CJ to injury and the team releasing Horton. Most importantly Ealy is one of our best run defenders on the Dline.

Of course you gotta be able to rush the passer but if you can't stop the run first that's a moot point.

Our first game against the Jaguars we gave 96 yards rushing, against the Texans we gave up 61 yards and against the Saints 70 yards.

The Buccaneers game we added Jared Allen and Delaire to boost our pass rush, but those guys are not the run stoppers that CJ and even Horton was and we gave up 141 rushing yards against the Buccaneers.

Tampa Bay and Chicago have two of the best pass defenses on paper but that's because teams are running all over them, they both are ranked 30th and 31st in points allowed as well. Tampa Bay has the current leader in sacks and are still giving up 29.3 points a game, stats such as sacks don't always tell the whole story.

Gonna need you to find snap count data to back that up.  Ealy may have been a second rounder, but he didn't see significant time until nearer to the end of last year.  Additionally, your 'production' only accounts for sacks and would require a split between run downs and passing downs to properly assess.  Finally, you mention 'fighting their way up the depth chart' but this isn't college - you're either the starter, a backup/ST, or you don't see the field.

Overall, I think Ealy had his best game of the season against the Bucs.  The stat line didn't pop, but watching the game, he impacted quite a few plays.  Impact is more important than stats.  For all of those whining and crying about Delaire getting two sacks while Ealy has zero on the season, really?!  We sign a guy off of a practice squad and he comes in and immediately gets two sacks and some people STILL find a way to turn that into a negative?!  LOL!

I don't care who is collecting the sacks as long as they happen.

I'm more interested in QB hurries at this point in his career. If he is getting close to the QB, then the sacks will eventually come. Same thing happened with Hardy and CJ. They were always getting pressure on the QB their first couple years, they just weren't quite getting there. Give him another year and as the game slows down for him and he bulks up a little bit more, those hurries turn into sacks.

    • So the last guy who had the job got hired by his former team directly into a role he has no direct experience in?
    • Hard to pass up millions for a couple of days work per week for a coaching gig in the NFL that is 60-80 hours each week during the season and a more relaxed 50 hours a week during the off season. Yeah, I'd love to see him as our DC but hard to see him giving up the cushy job there if he gets it. And he's going to be a great commentator for the network.
    • Really, I think that is where negotiations come in. If you've got a QB getting you to 10 wins but statistically he's not a great performer, then you say look you can take $22 million or you can try it on the market. Because let's face it, out there, any leadership skills that we're seeing aren't going to be on the table, it's just going to be performance and that lands him in the QB2 market, which is much, much less lucrative (although any of us would love that money).  No one is saying that Bryce will be a $50 million QB, barring something short of a miraculous jump. I'm just saying that if we are winning somehow with him at the helm, then it would be fuging stupid to dive back into the rookie pool all over again. Let's say we do hit the 10 win mark, heck, let's call it 11 and a second round in the playoffs. I think we can all say that would be a really uplifting result and one that should be doable if we have good play. What do we do then? Here's what I would offer if I were Morgan and Tepper. $25 million a year for 3 years, each year with up to $10 million in incentives for touchdowns, wins, playoff depth, being under 10 interceptions, completing a full season, passing yardage milestones, taking less than 15 sacks. Look, Bryce isn't a Ferrari, he isn't a Corvette, or a mid-level BMW. He's probably a new Toyota Sienna that will definitely get you somewhere and bring the whole team along with it, no fuss but not a lot of pizazz.  And really, it's about the destination, not about what drove you there.
