Michael, 11, got the football from Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newtonafter Newton threw a touchdown pass in a Nov. 22 victory over the Washington Redskins.

"I wanted to cry," Michael said in a recent visit to Bank of America Stadium to share his experience. "Cam, he's my hero."

Jaden Battle, an 11-year-old from Raleigh, North Carolina, got a football from Newton during a preseason game against New England. He might have summed up best what the program means to kids.

"It feels like I won the lottery," he said. "There's not a chance that you get a ball from Cam."

This just warms my heart. Cam is great guy.

All the local SEC-minded folks I hang with still refer to Cam as if he were playing at Auburn, and continue to bring up all his collegiate controversies. Even last Sunday, one said something about the fine Cam receives for giving away footballs (yes, I corrected that).

For whatever reason, there's haters out there; pointing them to articles like this can only help turn that ship around so they can see the real Cam: Good guy, good heart, sugar-cereal-lover, wacky shoe-wearing, always smilin', team leader, may the Force be with him, get-er-done MVP

Packers defensive end Julius Peppers snatched the ball from Newton after the touchdown and tossed it toward the sideline, forcing Newton to chase after the ball. That directed Newton, who normally picks out a kid near the middle of the end-zone wall, toward Colin.

Colin, whose father died of a heart condition a month earlier, was there with his two grandfathers. Newton had no idea of the pain Colin or his family had experienced.

All he saw was the smile.

That one got me.

If you hate Cam, it's because you want to. There is no earthly reason otherwise. You have to be living under a rock not to have heard about what he does for kids. The guy is just special. There is no other way to look at it.

HoF talent. With a heart of gold. And to think. I wanted to take Fairley, and suck for Luck. Man, I disappoint myself sometimes.

    • i was addicted i guess. i was commish of 2 of them. one of them had two conferences and didn't just have defensive players, but special teams, coaches, OL...just about everything. 24 total teams. draft clock was 6 hours because it was people all over the world. took forever. league was called the Psycho Ward. i was in 2 defensive only player leagues. had to keep it creative.
    • I am in 2 and struggle to keep things straight and find time but 12........holy poo thats impressive
    • few years back i was big into fantasy football and was in 12 leagues. i kept up with everything and was following people on twitter from every team just to make sure i was on top of everything. one of the people i followed was irsay, not for the news, but because after 1pm he got really entertaining. figured that was when he started tying one on.  it was pretty well know that he was an addict. likely that his death was tied to that. he's overdosed at least once to the point that his heart stopped. too bad he couldn't stop it.
