Wade Phillips

A lot was made in earlier threads last week that the Bronco's had no chance against us with the defensive scheme they displayed against the Patriots.  Speed rushing every play on the outside would be defensive suicide against any running team, much less the best pure rushing attack in the league and an extra runner in Cam.

But what makes everyone think they are going to bring the same scheme?  Wade Phillips has been a mediocre head coach but has a HOF career as a defensive coordinator.  What is he going to bring on Sunday?  How is he going to attack our offense?

It's worth pointing out that when the game against the Patriots ended Belichick made a beeline toward Phillips and only later to Kubiak.  In the post game presser he refused to blame his OL but instead said Phillips had just done a great coaching job.  Nothing revolutionary, just good coaching.

How will Phillips design his SB defense?  Will he have a spy?  Will he test Cam's arm?  Or will he bring pressure like he did last week?

Wade is one of the best defensive minds in the NFL, and in addition to that, runs a 34.  Not only is the 34 very confusing to almost all QB's, he actually has the players to make it tick.

I think, maybe, the best course of action will be a downhill running attack right up the gut on them.  Make them commit an extra defender to the run, as those corners can cover almost everyone.  I don't think that they can play as much man on D though, as they can't afford a spy, and if the corners turn their backs to Cam, he will have a field day running.

Not so sure they tee off against us either, may decide to let Cam beat them with his arm, and hope that the stage is too big for us.

The real answer...no one knows what the hell Wade will do, but he will have that team prepared for whatever they believe can limit Cam and our offense.

Bring pressure around the ends. Cam will have 200 yds and 5 rushing TDs.

that's my point, Phillips isn't stupid.

Cam can be extremely accurate but has episodes of 2-3 throws a game where he can still throw high.  I think the bronco's will have a LB spy and play contain on the outside for most of the game, trusting their secondary.

So, if true, our running game becomes the critical factor.  Can we keep the sticks moving?  Will we try to strike early or will Shula be patient and attack the interior of that defense?

This team has jumped in front of so many teams, I wonder how they will react to that offensive strategy.

Phillips is good but our offense dictates what happens because it's multifaceted. At this point Cam has seen most blitz packages and has even played a Phillips coached defense. He knows we want to run the ball just like everyone else but can he stop it. I suggest spy cam and double Olsen.

Wade has to do two things.

1)Load up to stop the run. (Not easy with a base 3-4)

2)Somehow keep Olsen covered. (Just not easy period)

Now here is the conundrum, you cant do both of these things at the same time so the early downs will be to our advantage.  Get ahead of the sticks and the Denver game plan goes out the window.

Out of curiosity how have we done against Wade Phillip defenses in the past? I know he was with Houston before Denver and then Dallas but I don't know how we have faired against his coached teams.

Played him in 2011, but Cam was a youngster, Smith and Shockey caught TD passes, and DWill ran for 1.

Held Cam to 149 passing yards.

The D he runs now, and our offense/Cam are much better now though.

The real chess match is going to be in play calls.  If they blitz, we can get some guys open, or run away from the blitzes.  If they cover, we can run against that.  This will be our biggest test, appropriately.

I hope that Shula has some magic cooked up prior to this as well.  It's going to be interesting to see how we attack their defense just as how they attack our offense.

Absolutely I know we are light years ahead of the last time I was just curious. I think there is so much difference between those two teams.

They played 3 games against Top 10 rushing offenses....and gave up nearly 150 yards a game to each of them.  That is why.

    • Damn back to 10th. I only caught the last 5 minutes but some of those 3's were horrible lol. In that close of game you can't be launching those many hail mary's when you could be chipping away from the foul line. I guess no one wanted to get in the paint and didn't trust the refs to give them the calls maybe? Gonna watch the highlights to get a better idea of the flow of the game
    • I agree.  The Big 12 is a good conference, and he is the swinging dick in that conference.  If Bill Self retires, that sets Kansas back a bit, and Arizona moves even further ahead as the best team in that conference.  Arizona can crush west coast recruiting with USC / UCLA no longer being relevant for LA kids, and Gonzaga not being able to compete moneywise.   If Lloyd comes here, he will be second fiddle to Duke every single year in NIL and recruits.  Not to mention the entire SEC and Big East for kids who want to stay in those regions to play. This is why I keep saying go get Mark Few.  Has proven he can do more with less from an X / O perspective but can also recruit All American players and compete at a high level. He's a god at Gonzaga, but for $9M he'd make the move as that's 4x what he's making at Gonzaga, and makes him the highest paid coach in the country.
    • Certainly not going to miss his constant whiffs on sacks and tackles.
