A "stat" I want to ignore / continuing to break trends

UGH.  Saw this posted at ESPN by David Newton..  A "stat" I want to ignore.

Quote

Stat of the day: Newton is the fourth quarterback in Super Bowl history to enter the game with 50 combined passing and rushing touchdowns in a season, along with Peyton Manning (SB XLVIII), Tom Brady (SB XLII) and Dan Marino (SB XIX). The three previous quarterbacks to have at least 50 combined passing and rushing touchdowns entering their Super Bowl start all lost the game, by a combined 60 points. -- David Newton

But of course, it's not a meaningful "stat" - just a trend.  It's past history.  Other teams.  So, I'm choosing to believe this means nothing.

Perhaps, if there is any truth to it, it could be about teams / QBs coasting, over confident, not treating the game seriously enough.   I don't THINK Cam and the Panthers are doing this.  I don't hear over-confidence or boasting in their voices.  They seem pretty businesslike.

In any case, the Panthers have made NEW history all season.   Getting off to a fast start.  Winning after bye weeks.  Beating Seattle twice (including IN Seattle, and in the playoffs).  Beating Dallas.  Winning in prime time.   Coming back in the 4th quarter  Winning close games.  Leading the league in scoring...

There's no reason to let old trends / patterns hold us back, but every reason to believe the Panthers will break NEW GROUND and WIN.

Go Panthers.  Keep Pounding!

Those guys were/are also one-dimensional players. Cam has already bucked the trend via his method of scoring 50 TDs.

^This.  The QBs listed in the OP ran only when necessary and/or the situation presented itself.  None of them were an integral part of their offenses run philosophy. None of them accounted for anywhere near 10 or more of their 50 TDs on the ground.

    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
