Harper and Cotchery already gone?

Edit: Cotchery too!

According to Spotrac and overthecap it looks like 2016 had a "voided year" clause and we have already ate the dead money by virtue of this. So thats 900k dead money if we eat all this year or 450k if spread over the next 2 years.

Looks like Cotchery had a similar clause will be gone too.  His dead money is 1.3 Million. Not sure what his old cap figure was scheduled to be.

Cotchery made some big-time clutch catches this year, and has been a good mentor for our receivers.  He got screwed on that catch to start the SB  His drop near the end zone was a killer, but it's not fair to single out anyone given the amount of screwups that took place.

Regardless of what happens, I appreciate his contributions to the Panthers.  He is a stand up guy.

I have never understood the fascination with Bersin..I hope he is gone..

I think it's his football smarts, his being a good mentor for rookies, encyclopedic knowledge of the play book, decent depth - can plug & play him in any of the WR positions, good hands.  Clutch on 3rd downs....

Remember, we'll usually have 4 or 5 guys who are on the 53, usually inactive, but available if injuries strike.  Bersin can be a perfect fit in that situation.  Unfortunately, unlike this year, next year there'd be no option (as I understand it) of moving him back and forth from the PS, so there is less flexibility if he does get a roster spot.

Not saying he stays, but if Cotch is gone, I could see a place for Bersin.

That said, there are also the unknowns of Norwood, Hill and Byrd to wonder about and whether they'll be real contenders for the roster....

I want to take a WR at some point in the draft or sign a guy. No guarantee KB comes back ready day one. Could take some time to find his rhythm and get into football shape.

Good point. He may not be really ready until October, though I suspect that he's working hard to get back ASAP.

I am not going to make any predictions about departures. I will wait and see what happens. Gettleman has me trained to expect the unexpected. I wouldn't be surprised if both are axed, or both are here come training camp.  Experience and leadership on and off the field still have value. Cotchery made some good catches over the season. I'm not letting his sub-par performance in the Super Bowl jade his entire body of work.

As the saying goes, it's better to drop players a year early than a year too late.

That said, Harper's the more likely casualty. There's already leadership on the defensive side and has shown to be a liability in pass coverage. Could see a trade for another vet on the cheap though.

Cotchery is the harder call given our young receiver corps and his savinness. Personally, the biggest issue I have with him is that he's just not big or physical enough to be an ideal possession receiver for Cam. Keep him if we don't have another viable option.

    • Nobody on the huddle is saying we have an elite group offensively across the board. They aren't great. They're young. If you are expecting someone to agree with your position of blaming everyone around Bryce Young nearly three full seasons into his career you are going to be left holding the bag save for a handful of people who act like they are paid to defend his honor. Bryce Young is not a guy who has had to claw and fight his way into starting jobs in football. He's had the best to work with and been gifted roles since he was a teenager. The Panthers have one of the youngest rosters in the league and with us needing an infusion of young defensive talent in the upcoming draft we're only going to get younger. We need a QB who possesses the ability to elevate those around him. If you can't agree with me on that then there's nothing further to discuss.
    • All Bryce and the Panthers had to do was split with the Saints and a rookie QB. The bar was so low. They even had a whole bye week to prepare. The time for singing kumbaya was before that game. Anyone still talking about Bryce earning a second contract 43 games into his career is living a fantasy. He might get one from the Tepper owned Panthers but he's damn sure not earned it.
