Rumored he turned down $6 million from the Giants or Bucs.

That's about right and he was looking for North of 8mill a year.  He probably could have got it too if he moved west.  Like I said before, he was chasing big money and it was not there so he clamored back. Same thing happened to Capt his first FA, then the Vikings went retard and paid him CB1 money. Dave pays you what your worth. End of story.

Charles Johnson signed the big contract he played under cause that is what the market dictated.

People blame Hurney.

Charles Johnson would have been the BEST available DE/pass rusher on the free agent market. If the Panthers wouldn't have made him that offer, some other team would have.

Charles Johnson was exactly what the Panthers paid for him. A stud DE, and solid veteran leadership.

Fans can piss and moan about injuries all they want to, but it doesn't matter.

CJ came about as close as you can to justify his huge contract, can't ask for more. hopefully this leads to a strong year and maybe a couple more at a reasonable price.

we may not have exciting FA periods by bringing in big names, but we do have exciting FA with stuff like this-- who do we cut, how is GMan playing hardball, what random guy is gonna come out of the blue and blow up for us this year? really excited to see what happens next.

I truly think people seem to forget this. I'd literally repeat everything you just said but of course that'd be redundant.

We definitely would have lost him that year, and at the time he was worth a premier contract.

Best Bargain of the Day

Quote

The Panthers released defensive end Charles Johnson last Thursday when he was set to count more than $15 million on the salary cap. They agreed to re-sign him on Tuesday for $3 million, despite getting offers for double that elsewhere. A lot of players say it's not about the money, but Johnson truly meant it. As Johnson showed in the Super Bowl, he still has plenty of snaps left as a solid starter. The Panthers were thin at defensive end if he left, and Johnson ultimately spurned division rivals (Tampa) after visiting with them, just like he spurned a big-free agent offer from the Atlanta Falcons in 2011.

I would rather have Charles Johnson than Mario Williams at any salary, much less at less than half the price.

Johnson staying "home" with the Panthers is a cool story, just like Tamba Hali's contract with the Chiefs. It would be strange to see Hali play in any other uniform. One year after taking a paycut to stay on the roster, Hali earned his three-year, $22 million deal.

I've always liked CJ. He's a stand up, hard working guy. Not a Mr. Ego, me-first type. I'm really glad he's back. His leadership would've been hard to replace. His intensity would've been hard to duplicate. Here's hoping injuries stay minor & he has a stupendous year. Push for that Panthers sack record!

Hope we can land coples and a vet DT during this free agency now. Don't wanna have to rely too much on any rookie dlineman

Highly doubt we'll sign a DT.  Still believe we'll get Coples who will most likely be Short's backup at DT.  Rest of our cap space will go to the secondary, specifically safety.  I'm still high on the idea about drafting a hog molly DT to replace Love.  Love is decent, but we could do better.

Best Bargain of the Day

Best bargain of the day is an understatement, this will probably be the biggest bargain for the entire offseason.

JPP with one hand got $10 million, Mario Williams who blatantly quit on his team got a $16 million deal. I can barely even believe we got CJ back at 3. I figured some team would offer him a muti-year deal at 8-10 million per season and he'd be gone.

I'm hoping we get Coples as Short's backup and re-sign Love on a multi-year deal as Star's backup.

    • Right, so basically what I said in my first post about this last night. Tepper needs to use that big wallet of his in one of the few ways it can be used in the NFL given the cap.   Give Scourton a bigger signing bonus but not a fully guaranteed deal. Everyone wins in that scenario as if Scourton is smart and hires good money people, he'll take that bigger signing bonus and use it to make more money in the end over the next 4 years than if he just had his fully guaranteed deal and a smaller signing bonus.
    • It is all confusing and layered. SB is the cash you get very soon within weeks or in simple terms, its what you get to sign the paper work. Players and agents can agree on contract but what to "wait" to sign......teams don't like that cause you can "Carlos Boozer" yourself. In order to get that ink dry, while keeping the contract the same, portion it as a bonus to "sign" and get the funds with ________ .   * But Ive seen worded contracts that split the SB or a 20% to a later date. The beans counters can fill in the details about why certain dates are better and save the team money.. Theres tricks to the trade and accounting is full of them.    Ugh another big layer, is SB can be used to manipulate cap and players. Ill try to give a example that makes enough sense. Believe it or not having a owner like Tepper is a cheat code for this. He has cash in hand, where as Mark Davis had problem making pay roll and had to move the team to Vegas....... Tepper can give you 100,000,000 SB right now and the team can spread out the cap hit. Another owner doesn't have or want to give the player 100,000,000 in cash, but offered the same guaranteed contract in roster bonuses fully guaranteed over the next few years........ Which one do you want??? Everyone wants the money now, not before another inflation waves hits in 2 years. So it does 'pay" to have a owner like tepper that's able to have real cash on hand, while it also works GREAT for cap help. Heres a good video, if you can stand coked up pat and mask look-a-like AJ
