He's been on a downward spiral since the Al Capone's vault thing 30 years ago. I remember when he was a respected journalist.

Cocaine, it's a helluva drug.

His mental hospital expose did a lot of good for the country. Every day he's been alive since then has been pretty bad.

I was so disappointed when he didn't find gold and dead hookers.  Didn't only find a sign or something?

You are right. That mental hospital expose was incredibly important for mental health treatment in the US, possibly one of the most important things to affect how we treat people clinically to happen in the last 100 years. He literally saved hundreds, if not thousands of lives. He also allowed long-form journalism that wasn't on 60 Minutes to go nationwide. If not for Geraldo's breaking that story, you wouldn't have 20/20, Dateline or a host of other TV news magazines.

He did a lot of good stories on 20/20 as well, but once he started breaking away and didn't have to answer to editors and producers as much, he started drinking his own Kool-Aid and it went downhill pretty fast.

I remember watching it, I guess I was around 13 or so. It just went on and on with all of these history pieces and puff pieces as the excavation crew worked. They'd cut back to him and he'd be all excited and then he'd pull something out and it would be an old bottle. And then another old bottle. And another bottle. Nothing more than old bottles.

Apparently Al Capone's vault was where his goons just threw their empty soda and gin bottles.

Such a let down. I felt bad for the guy, because you could tell he was embarrassed about the whole thing, but he kept gamely going on.
