We're saying the same thing.  I'm not saying we should go out and spend a ton of money on an elite man cover guy.  It wouldn't make sense given our scheme.  My point is that Norman isn't worth what he thought he was because even though he's an elite CB, he isn't the type of CB that makes top of the market money.  It's the same reason why Short's next contract will be bigger than Star's.  Pass rushers make more money than run stuffers, same as man cover CBs make more than zone CBs.

I don't think he is worth a Revis type contract.

All I am saying he was worth a tag rental given how close this team was to winning a Super Bowl.  One more shot at it.  Given he was a big part of it.  So his drama could be put up with given that.

Like I said, I got no issue with Dave's way in general.  But with everything there are exceptions.  So I am not advocating we pay Norman the deal he wants.  Merely he was worth the headache of a tag and another run in 2016.

$14M is a lot of space to have tied up. His cap hit would've been a lot lower with a long-term deal.  Gettleman is probably seeing this as a chance to get guys like Short, Star, Turner, and/or Norwell locked up.  With $14M tied up in Norman some of those contracts he was planning to extend would probably have to wait and that increases the odds of potentially losing guys you want to keep.  If a one year rental of Norman caused us to lose a guy like Short then no, it wouldn't be worth it.

Not in this situation, but he might in another.  You think he would've handled this the same way if it was Cam Newton?  Not a chance.

"I think it just confirms what I've suspected for awhile now.  Gettleman isn't going to spend big bucks in the secondary.  We're gonna spend our money on D on the front seven and look for bargain players who got our system in the secondary.  "

It goes back to this. Josh ain't Cam, and Cam didn't have to play hardball. G-man paid him what he was worth, Josh wanted more. Not that I'm hating on Norman for wanting to get his $.

See now I don't know what to believe. You're claiming that Josh's agent effed this up.  Yet Norman himself will have to kiss the ring if he wants to come back?  Those 2 things don't add up.  So I'm gonna have to call BS on your sources. Gettleman doesn't strike me as a "sins of the father" type.

Josh having to say "sorry my agent effed it up, Carolina is where I want to be and can I please still have the contract you were offering" would be kissing the ring.

A new agent just coming and trying to restart negotiations isn't going to cut it from the sounds of it based on Gettleman's press conference today.

Ive seen it mentioned in a few comments on other sites that drugs may have been a factor.  I highly doubt this is the case. I hope not.

Probably because yesterday was the first day of the substance abuse random testing window.  If he pissed hot, word would've already leaked.

The main thing to keep in mind is josh didn't want to play anywhere but Carolina. However, he also wanted to be paid.

His agent preached hardball, telling him "this is how the game is played." He was presented tons of similar instances (drew brees being the prime example) of how these holdouts always end well for the player.

At no point was josh trying to get out of Carolina. Gettleman just wasn't interested in play Josh's agent's game.

Additionally the panthers do not think as highly of josh as josh thinks of himself, and that because of the schedule they don't really feel he's integral, which I don't understand.

At this point, josh would have to take even less than he was offered originally to come to Carolina, or a short two year deal.

Josh is now torn between his last paycheck or staying at a place that has basically treated him like a son since he was drafted.

thomas Davis, Charles Johnson and Roman Harper (wtf) are telling him to take less money on a one year deal to take another run at the super bowl.

gettleman basically just sent a message to every single agent and player in the league, and every employee is updating their resume lol

holy crap man

So effectively, you told us nothing at all

If Norman truly wanted to be here and listened to bad advice from an inexperienced agent looking to make a name for himself with this deal, then I feel bad for him.  Based on his reaction yesterday, it seems believable.  You'd think a guy wanting maximum value would welcome hitting the open market.  Even though it's bad timing, there are still some CB needy teams out there with the cap room to give him a mega deal, but Josh seemed really bummed, not excited.  Seems like he wanted to be here and realized he and his agent overplayed their hand and fuged it up.

I've heard he was at a funeral, so can't put complete stock in the AP quote.
