Should #89 be Replaced?

Smitty was a great WR for us. But he pissed in the cornflakes, and got waived. And the crap with "I was born to be a Raven" should give you delusional turds a clue.

Mike Minter cried when they stopped him from getting on a plane. That's loyalty.

It doesn't even matter because WRs don't like 80s numbers anymore for some reason. We have Norwood and Hill in the 80s, the rest have teen numbers.

lol ...  good point..  although I'd love that #17 if I had any speed to add to my game...  regardless though.....

Whether we were a SB contender or the laughingstock of the NFL, the guy always left everything he had on the field and was legitimately the best in the league at his position for a number of years.  His highlight reel compares favorably to any WR who has ever played.   Yeah he got a little salty when he got cut but that just proves how much he loved it here, as has all of the great things he continues to do in the community to this day.  No way he doesn't get his number retired someday.

big time comment that apparently is easily forgotten...  love to hear another player that's put in his type of effort, skill and dependability..  #17 would appreciate this comment...

89 IMO loves the city of Charlotte.

However, I am not 100% convinced he retires a Panther.  I think odds are much higher than people think he retires a Raven.

you think he going to sign a one day deal with Dave? I wouldn't bet my money on it

if that happens, people will be fine with anyone wearing it

he already said he will.........

they didn't retire 17 and he was just a big a part of the team as smith.

eeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh............

Yeah!  Especially those (what should have been) felony assaults!

Dude, #89 has *always* always always been about #89.  That's what made him capable of achieving so much at his size.  His quickness to take offense and use that as motivation.

He couldn't give a flying fug about the Carolina Panthers.  He's made that damn clear over the last couple of years.

really though.. this comes across like he's been involved with domestic disputes...  But he has said he loves Carolina and the Panthers...  so........

I would only retire that number if he retires with the Panthers and I'm saying that about my favorite player. But if he feels like more of a Raven than a Panther then by all means replace him.

but he has also claimed his love for the Panthers and the Carolinas.....

#87 wasn't retired and he was with us for 11 years.

good point..........  but then again...  Muhammad left for another team for more money,...  sooooo,

Awwww, you make me feel so awful.

But thanks for pointing out the difference between a player who carries his team as a team player and a player who doesn't give a poo about anybody but himself.  GREAT POINT.

Not an accurate representation of Steve Smith........  close, to a point..     but short-sighted...

Nah, baw.

I'm a fan-boy of a proven team player.

You're a fan-boy of a proven (though uncharged, but charged anywhere else in the real world) felon asshole.

DIFFERENCE.

felon?   I mean, if you know something we don't...  feel free to disclose....   I realize you stated "uncharged"...  but to what extent?

Well Peppers was a 4 time All-Pro selection with us (6 all together) with 6 seasons of 10+ sacks as a Panther. He has the HOF stats and credentials to make it and we still use his number.

hahah..  ok

I wonder if #89 tells his children about the innocent men he assaulted?

He probly has...   I would bet $$$ he will help his children do better than he has....   unless there's something I don't know...  which is possible.  I've heard stories..  So many rumors..  I'd love to know.....

that little fuger said it not me. He never was that great of a receiver anyway. just a little Napoleon complex asshole who was always above the team. Hope he rots in Baltimore and his corpse stinks that place up more.

hahhahaha lol  okay

I'm not saying that he should or shouldn't. I don't really have an opinion. But looking at the standard that the team has set of only having Mills number retired so far I don't see it happening.

reasonable...   but there are counterpoints.....

You mean the guy who made sure the media was always there every time he did anything in the nature of community service looks like he did more than the other guys?

INCONCEIVABLE!

I don't buy this...  he's done more in the community than was ever reported....

I don't care whether it will be or not. I personally give the title of greatest Panther to Davis considering the injuries that he has fought through and still plays at a high level. His leadership and loyalty to the team has been a huge boost for us more so than what Steve contributed, which isn't anything against Steve since he was great just I personally would take TD before him. Steve's 89 might be retired after he hangs up the cleats but I don't consider it a sure thing to be honest.

As it stands I could see a few numbers retired in the future: Cam's 1, Olsen's 88, TD's 58, and Luke's 59. I would put Kalil on the list since he has been arguably the best at his position but linemen don't tend to get recognized as much as they should.

I know this is going to buried in this thread, but I have to say that if it weren't for Steve Smith I wouldn't be the Panthers fan I am today.  He did so much for this team in a lot of years when we didn't have much to go on.  Watching games when Steve would go off made me happier than anything.  Here's a 5'9" WR throwing down with the best and still coming out on top, BEFORE CAM.  I understand why he was released, but I think most of you out there can appreciate what he did for the Panthers.  I hope he retires here, at home, as a Panther.  If he does, no one should ever wear 89.  If he doesn't, I personally believe that it still shouldn't be ruled out.  He has done so much for this city, outside of the Panthers, and that should be honored just as much.

Who knew my Innocent Questions would turn into a Bitch Fest. I was just thinking... if Garrett made the Team, we should make him #89.

His college number sure won't work.

Well the only 2 WR left to get numbers are Garrett and Stoshak... So it will either be 12,14, 15,16 or 82, 84, 85, 86, 88 or 89.

Garrett will be 85 in Camp and Stoshak will be 86.
