Michael Oher Signs 3 Year Extension - $21.6m

I just posted an update in the "Top NFL contracts" thread that I'd posted earlier this week.   This signing now gives the Panthers 7 players with contracts above 5 million per year.  Still below the league average of 9 players per team.

Oher's contract of just over 7 million per year is still a relative bargain given that the average salary for the top LTs (22 of them) is just over 9.1 million per year.  If my math is right, Oher now becomes the 16th highest paid LT in the league.   I'd say that's just about right.  Perhaps a shade higher than I expected, but the mentoring and leadership he provides, and his rapport with Cam are huge.  The fact that he LOVES being in Carolina counts for a lot.  You know he's going to give his all for his teammates.

even LTs that have shown something even remotely resembling the potential to be in the top third of the league get paid.  we all remember the frenzy around anthony collins- he isn't on a team right now and he got $15 million guaranteed from the bucs in 2014.

this extension gives the coaching staff and gettleman the flexibility to develop a prospect to step in once oher is finished or deemed expendable.  PFF had him in the top half of the league as a pass blocker last season and at this price point that's solid value.

    • It’ll be interesting to see how the board falls I completely agree with you on TE for us The safety from Oregon would be the cherry on top for Evero’s defense/scheme.  If a OL’men is there that you love it would be very hard to pass up. This fan base seems to just see Walker as a stop gap but I wouldn’t be so sure. He’s the same age as Ekwonu. He’s had a much more impressive career arc/progression than Icky has. He’s the better pass protector. As far as I see it if Walker has a good year I’d bring him back over Icky. Ekwonu isn’t some elite franchise LT. Playing next to Lewis is going to be great for Walker much like it has been for Icky. We definitely need to get younger/cheaper on the OL though so for this reason alone it’s still top of my list come round 1 if board falls this way  Could also use another corner with Mike Jackson’s deal up after this season and needing a nickel but Corey Thornton looked really good in that role in the limited time we got to see him. However he’s coming off an achillies injury and you never know with those.  Then as mentioned above we do still have a need at WR. As far as “weapons” go it’s kind of a 2 man show with Tmac and Coker and neither is a burner. If Jordan Tyson is there at 19 and we can have a young WR group locked up for cheap that’s a huge advantage cap wise  And don’t forget linebacker. That clip in Devin’s Lloyd blueprint they used from Evero saying they need more intelligence there could’ve been left out for Wallace’s sake but it’s true. Wallace is lost in coverage. Pair a smart linebacker with Lloyd and that’s a group with Wallace and Cherelus being depth
    • The fact that this is even a discussion is a testament of the level of front office badassery that's going on.
    • Not always. LT was for the Giants. So was Ray Lewis. Von Miller was moreso than Manning his final year in the season that shall not be named. It's usually the QB, but not always.
