Why Gettleman traded for Lee

top dawg

Well, at least you're getting an answer about why Dave Gettleman pulled the trigger on Andy Lee in an article by David Newton, and it's pretty simple.

"To have a team like this and to go into the season with a rookie punter is really rolling the bones," said Gettleman, referring to dice. "Andy Lee is a Pro Bowl punter. People talk about checking boxes. Well, that was a huge box to check.

"He's an outstanding holder as well as a great punter. It was something we felt we needed to do."

"As a general manager, every night I say to myself, 'Have I given Ron the players that he can win with?'" Gettleman said. “I constantly ask myself that question, because at the end of the day that's my job.

"I felt it was a necessary move, and I felt it was a really strong move."

Gettleman ain't trying to leave any stone unturned. And to those inclined to lament about Colquitt, it should be pretty obvious that if Huddlers knew about a possible release of Colquitt, then Getty knew about it, and more. Just because Colquitt became available doesn't mean he was coming here. Plus---bottom line---I would bet that G-man just believes that Lee is an outright better kicker.

He let a fairly middling kicker who wasn't the best at ball placement walk, tried the cheap route, and then aggrssively went out and found a replacement to his liking in order to upgrade the team.

"Strong move" for a strong kicker and holder. Another box for Ron Rivera checked!

Now let's wait to see what other boxes are going to be checked by the end of the weekend.

It was a necessary move. I was legitimately getting pissed at the thought of trotting out a scrub punter this season. Any Panthers fan that has been through the ringer over the years knows what it's like to have to hold your breath when our special teams were on the field.

    • Adios and good night, done talking about what we should have done but it’s weird when anti-tankers try and get back on the high horse.
    • Yes. Fitt said he liked Young for two years. He hitched his wagon to him. Reich and Young were going 2-15, nothing I said we should get would have saved him. A new coach plus Tepper (and Morgan) would have wanted the draft assets we kept or got to be used by a better GM/Coach. SMH, you need to read my post and your own again. You said: “So we should have sold off all of our talent and what?” I was being sarcastic that they still were in the roster because the guys you are saying we shouldn’t have sold off got sold off anyway but instead of getting full value, we got scraps. We had an opportunity to sell at the highs and instead we let the stocks lose 50-75% and then sold them. Because we didn’t tank in 2022 when the Rams basically handed the idea to us, we either set the team back several years to where we won’t do anything and will be back at the drawing board or kept enough talent off the team that we may make the playoffs but we still won’t be a top team like an extra handful of 1st rounders could have gotten us.
    • Holy poo... we have allowed the fewest goals in the playoffs, total. Including the teams that lost in the first round... lmao
