Me too.  I feel like getting CJ back made us think we could steal another season with our current DEs. I'm sure we thought Kony would take another step in his development and CJ would bounce back and be better. Instead, CJ is his same washed up self - the effort is there, but the ability isn't - and Ealy is just? Ealy is just WTF. I don't know who that guy was wearing his jersey in the Super Bowl, but that's the only real standout performance for an entire game that we've ever seen from him.

I believe CJ was meant to be a back up. It appeared the front office wanted to rely on Ealy and Delaire as the starting DEs with Addison and CJ as the back ups.

I believe the front office was forcing the coaches to play the young defensive players they had drafted instead of relying on veterans (Boston, Bene, Bradberry, Worley, Ealy, Delaire, and Butler). CJ was likely a consolation for the coaches and players since he was a captain.

If Rivera had Harper, Tillman, Finnegan, Allen, and Dwan Edwards, I am positive they would be getting more snaps than the younger players listed above.

Here is a great video that shows the value of a disruptive or dominant DE. This is from the Seattle playoff game last season.

The play is a designed TE screen. Jared Allen completely blows it up and forces Russell Wilson to stay in the pocket. The hesitation occurs and KK comes running free for the sack.

This was 90% Jared Allen, but KK gets the spotlight.

The DEs the Panthers have now, outside of CJ, would likely pursue down the line and never acknowledge the pulling OL thinking it is a run.

Jared Allen was a factor on several of KKs sacks last season.

The DEs must free up the DTs. The DTs must free up the LBs in a 4-3.

Dwight Freeney would have did great in CAR, great mentor to Ealy. Not sure if CJ is the best for Ealy. Maybe CAR can swing a deal for Cam Wake.

I'd put Ealy's ass on the bench. He's a total nonfactor. Maybe a benching will wake him up.

My only objection would be who the hell would stop the run then?

Ealy has been ass at pass rushing but he makes plays in the run game.

Guess that makes him a drafted version of Wes Horton though...

I love it how when people are underperforming and we can all see it, players and coaches alike are trying to convince us we know nothing about football.

A sack shows effort, ability, skill, relentlessness and desire. It's a measure by which worth is measured for a reason. That's why they gave Greg Hardy 13mill, he had the ability and desire and skill to get to the QB and be disruptive.

Peppers would have been a value trade like Allen was a guy nearing the end looking for a SuperBowl. After this offseason I'm convinced the Panthers front office isn't trying to reach the Super Bowl this year. The coaches and players take the blame because improvements and upgrades weren't allowed.

At least my Cajun filet biscuit is a more consistent product :-/

    • I'd edited to be more clear where he was ahead of league average, but realize it was easily missed, sorry.  I do hope he falls off a cliff production wise because if he actually continues at this pace it's highly likely the TDs come and then he'll be a real problem. Anyway, to the stats... Shough is substantially better than the average in completion percentage, YPG, and INT% (68% vs 64.4% and 237 vs 215 and 1.7 vs 2.2). He is pretty close to the average in Y/A (7.14 vs 7.1) and rating (91.63 vs 91.8). He is a bit below the average in TDs per game (1.3 vs ~1.5, which is hard to average exactly due to the number of players that are part of this stat), QBR (51.54 vs 54.7) and quite a bit below in TD% (3% vs 4.7%). In advanced stats, he's above the league average in intended air yards/attempt (8.1 v 7.7) and on target % (76.8 vs 74.6), while barely below is in bad throw % (16.1 vs 16.0). This jives with what I've seen - decent young player, playing at a level that looks like a veteran starter, on a bad team. I've always said (and this is true of Bryce too, I even mentioned it this year) that I am less concerned with 30+ yard bombs than consistency at 15+ yards, because you need to be able to threaten past the sticks. Shough is doing that. Vs us in week 15 he had ~one third of his passes 15ish or more yards and he was money on them, and that wasn't really an exception, he has had some nice throws outside of that.  All that said, dude is just super new to the league, and once film gets out, if he does have limitations they will be exploited. No way he can get OROTY. And thanks for the kind words - I am prone to hyperbole at times, but I'm also just impressed by Shough. We'll see if he can keep it up (I hope not, unless the Saints randomly trade him lol)
    • To be fair, going from 2 wins, to 5 wins, to 8 wins at least is a pretty big positive no matter how insufferably miserable a select handful in this group want to make everything.
    • Yeah Moore is definitely going to be a problem.  I remember he was the favorite for our job at one point in time.
