With all the talk still surrounding KK Short and Ron Rivera mentioning yesterday how many times KK Short was double teamed, I decided to watch every passing play against the Saints and make a note of who is getting double teamed. 

 

Here are the results...

Player - Double Teams

KK Short - 14

Star Lotulelei - 11

Kyle Love - 6 

Wes Horton - 5

Mario Addison - 4

Charles Johnson - 2

Kony Ealy - 2 (both as a defensive tackle)

 

So, Rivera was right. KK Short was double teamed the most often of all defensive line players, followed by Star in a close second place. In other words, the Panthers defensive tackles are getting, by far, the most attention on the defensive line. This is normal. However, there are many plays where both defensive tackles are getting doubled on the same play without an extra offensive lineman in the game. 

 

Observe... 

Both Star and KK are immediately doubled. The Saints were so unconcerned with the Panthers defensive ends that Kony Ealy was left on an island by himself against a backup left tackle. Charles Johnson is left alone until he gets well past the line of scrimmage where the running back and the late arriving right tackle are enough to stop him, (having already stopped Star's momentum.)

Also, Kony Ealy did receive two double teams in this game, both from the defensive tackle position. He was never doubled and rarely chipped as a defensive end.

In conclusion, yes, KK Short was doubled more against the Saints. Star is also receiving a great deal of double teams. The lack of defensive end concern from the opposing offense allows this to happen.

So in the end we've learned that a DT is pretty much always going to be double teamed. Didnt we know this already? I could be wrong but arent taclkles the ones either left alone or helped by a TE or RB? I feel like we are going in circles.

Also had success with TD and Shaq coming off the edge.

Speaking of Shaq, where the hell is that guy?

I haven't been able to see every Panthers game this season (very very rare) due to work, but I don't hear much about this young man.

He's been playing very well. Luke, Shaq and TD are the only reason our defense isn't giving 60 points per game.

The 1 tech DT is suppose to get doubled. When a 3 tech DT is getting doubled more than the 1 tech DT or the 5 tech DE, then you have problems with the 1 tech DT and 5 tech DE in passing situations. KK was doubled more than 14 times on 49 pass plays. He was doubled 3 times in the final drive alone.

What bothers me is the DT combo of Love and Horton after the Saints got past the 50 yard line. Why do that when the Saints are in optimal scoring position? It seemed like KK and Star were resting when the Panthers needed to apply the most pressure.

Good to hear.  I've been having to play catch up with DVR, and working more than usual lately....sucks, but whatever.

      Hawks said nah we good and sent him to the shadow realm aka the Wizards. Cold blooded. I mean they're 2-2 in a series with a young up and coming Knicks team largely through 34 year old CJ McCollum. Even if they ultimately lose the series at least they are there and have something to build on. I think Hornets fans are just beaten down and lack the objectivity to assess the situation. They think we are going to get so much worse if and when we finally change gears. Worse how? We've already been a lottery team for years now. We've already been looking to win our first playoff series in about a quarter century. We already can't get past the play in and in failing to do so we have completely embarrassed ourselves twice looking like we don't even belong. Honestly there is absolutely no excuse for a team like the Magic to be more competitive and successful than us in the playoffs. Absolutely disgusting. But that's just me. I was fuging lit when we got the Hornets back in Charlotte but that is old old news. It's time for these boys to get into a playoff series. Enough is enough. If they can't do it for 2026-27 then they need to make wholesale changes regardless.

      Not one single pick that is asking me why we drafted a guy in the first place. It was a guy we needed and/or a guy that had certain traits making them stand out. Best of all, I feel everyone we drafted are capable of stepping onto the field this year and have a meaningful role (even Kuwatch on special teams). Obviously, nothing is guaranteed but I'm not seeing any huge flags on guys because they're risky projects or massive overreaches.
