In light of the Cam Newton recent controversy, Dean Blandino made it clear officials that miss calls will be penalized.

"They are held accountable for the mistakes they make," he said. "We have a rigid evaluation system that includes looking at every play of every game, and they get a game report and they get graded like players do. We look at that at the end of the season when we assign the postseason, and then for retention purposes. If an official isn't grading out over the course of a season or several seasons we have to look at making a move. So they are held accountable and we have had turnover in recent seasons."

From the way he worded it, it sounds like this may have been a system already in place, and not anything new. He most likely brought this up to assure the public they have a system for referees who underperform.

Do you believe that the referees will now be held more accountable for their actions, and provide much better calls? Or do you think this is just a mere gesture to pacify the public and Cam Newton for the short-term?

Been that way for a very long time. If they are especially terrible then they can get "suspended" a week. Not really a suspension but they will get skipped over in the rotation one week and not get paid. Happened to Pete Morelli last year after he and his blew two game deciding calls within a couple weeks of each other. Like actually changed the outcome of the game. Hochuli didn't get to go to the postseason that year he screwed up that fumble call in the Chargers-Broncos game that led to a rule change and he goes every single year.

Yeah, that system was already in place, he's just trying to say it means something now.

If he is really about that life, do like Adam Silver has done with the NBA to assure fans there is no ulterior motives and make those official grades and reports available to the fans.  Be transparent.

Exactly. Players are secretly thanking him. Even though it was already in place, they're gonna make some visible changes.

      I'd hold on to Walker - we have no OT depth at all. Freeling is a block of clay - all the tools are there and he appears to have a great attitude. He needs serious work on his technique to realise his potential though.

      From my watch last night: They weren't trading out of 19 unless it was a daft offer once Freeling got there. They were clearly antsy to get Hunter - and Minnesota actually called to offer the trade down. They weren't trading out of the third round pick once Brazzell fell to it (and Canales would have been happy with him in the second round). They traded back a lot on Day 3 - even if Morgan 'Babe Ruth'd' it with Lee, Hecht and Wheatley; they clearly weren't the only guys they would have taken at those picks. I'm curious to know which player caused the reaction at the start of day 2 (Dan Morgan): "of course they'd pick him"

      Watching this confirms that this staff and front office is super high on Monroe Freeling. I wouldn't be surprised if he's gotta a real chance to win the starting LT job in camp. If he does, we can look to flip Rasheed Walker to a contender desperate for tackle help.   As for Ickey I still really like him and wanna extend him but based on how the staff was talking about Freeling it might be time for ickey to start taking some practice sets at guard if he wants to stay here as we are gonna have to have figure out a solution for the contracts of Lewis and Hunt.  My preferred scenario for the Oline in 2027 is Freeling-Ickey-Hech-Lewis-Moton.
