Read Option at its finest...

5th year running the read option, and still no one has any idea what to do. Blame the players all you want, but they apparently have not been taught very well. Who are the teachers again?

We need to stop building our offense around Cam's running ability. Build a god damn run game that can sustain itself without this read option bullsh*t and without Cam running. Once you build that and then add in Cam's running ability the offense will be tremendously more successful.

I'm getting tired of this read option crap. Shula doesn't have a clue what to do with a QB like Cam. Time to be a traditional offense. Get a blocking FB and a young RB for the future: Fournette

I wanna know why Williams decided to block the interior lineman instead of the outside one.

Frankly, it makes little difference what you run if a defender gets to the backfield that quickly.

If I see that read option power one more time with Tolbert running off the right tackle for a 1 yard loss....I'm going to drive down the the road and jerk the wheel into a bridge abutment.

we need to stop that . we need to bring in a vet at tackle to compete im not saying tackles our biggest issue but its up there . also what is it going to take to get shula out of carolina hes killing us , stop the read option already its not fooling anyone just have cam take the ball and run without it . also the running on first down and second every drive getting no yards is fuging killing us pass the damn ball . also how come our screens never work??

Since some clearly don't understand the blocking scheme, allow me to explain.

 

In the option, you have a read man. In this instance, it's the DE at the top. He is unblocked because he is determining dive or keep. Williams, then, goes to reach the interior lineman. Trai is supposed to chip and get to linebackers level, but they blitz off the dive read's edge with their outside backer. Williams sees it, peels off the reach inside to pick that blitzer up. Trai takes the DT.

 

Cam sees the blitz as well, so instead of pulling and running off tackle, as designed, he now is filtered inside... where the blocking didn't work because the blitz caused the right side to remain static instead of moving up and creating space.

 

The play itself was fine. Just a good counter play by the defense that stopped it. Let's not forget we ran the same read option 3 times in a row for 5 yard gains later in the game.

There was nothing wrong with the play design itself, just a better counter defense by KC

The play call is a problem because more teams are keying in and blitzing on the side. I recall in Cam's sophomore season Chudznski began favoring the Read-Option too much and Ron spoke up and said we needed to incorporate a more traditional approach to the run game, and it turned our season around.

I personally think that we DO NOT posses the pieces to run from a traditional I-Formation, I love Olsen as much as the next but he leaves a level of desire in the run blocking department. Tolbert is quite possibly the worst blocking lead back I have ever seen (recently cut in Madden), and Oher, and Remmers grade poorly in run blocking.

I think the reliance on the option/misdirection is to cover up and mask personnel deficiencies that we have. We don't have a Jeff King, or even a Ben Harstock, to me not having ONE legit blocking TE on the roster is a severe oversight by a team that wants to run. So what if it tips your hand (you don't think subbing in a 6th lineman tips your hand - Chris Scott), teams know we want to run anyway. Don't give me ''coach speak'' give me results, give me a roster that can ''run when we need'' to as Rivera said back when we was first hired.

Where's our play action passing game to slow the rush down, and like a poster said, where in the heck is our screen game, and I like what Fozzy brings, there's a burs to him that Stewart lacks, when you can't run through a defense, you have to look at running around them.

The league has figured out Shula's offense and he never ever ever ever (did I mention ever????) changes it up. He needs to be fired at the end of this season. No excuses for not making adjustments week in and week out. The lack of 2nd half scoring is enough to drop any OC in the league.

He bought himself a season last year with how well we performed, he has to many excuses that could cause him to be retained for at least one more season due to injuries across the offensive line, and Stewart for several games. I'd like to see Dorsey call the plays if we want to maintain playbook consistency.

As a fan I should not be able to guess our offensive plays more often that not, most of us can tell when it's a run or pass. You don't think DC's and players can as well. We telegraph so badly, this offense has ZERO pace, I understand keeping your defense fresh, but when you can't score points, to make an opponent one dimensional you are still asking your defense to do a ton of work.

We were able to see a good pass rush because we actually scored points, forcing teams to become one dimensional and the rushers could tee off. Now, we play it close to the vest and it allows teams to stick to their game plans, because we are going three and out in the second half damn near every possession.
