Are we going to waste another first round pick on defense?

OTs like Matt Kalil, Luke Joekel, and Greg Robinson? There have been a ton of highly touted rookie OTs bust in recent years.  Probably more busts than hits. Not sure why, because an OT used to be one of the safest high picks you could make, but that seems to have pulled a 180 recently.

I wouldn't complain about either Garrett or Peppers as the pick, but honestly, they're probably the only two defensive prospects I wouldn't complain about with our 1st rounder.

Why name all the bad ones, there are good ones that have beend drafted at the range we are picking.

Yes we likely will, and honestly its OK.

One, we obviously need help at DE, S, and CB. Hell, if we don't re-sign Addison we need two DE's.

Two, its a loaded defensive draft.

Three, defense wins championships. Look what the Broncos did to us, what the Seahawks did to the Broncos, etc. Every time a high powered offense meets a top defense, the defense wins.

Four, we have a focused need on offense. The line. We have the QB and yes we have the receivers. No hero deep about taking high WR's. Has that won Luck a championship? Has Tom Brady needed high round WR's. But yes we need oline.

I can only hope that we spend money on the secondary this off season and stock up on young talented lineman for both sides in the draft.

Purely personal preference but I'm a fan of having the defense stronger than the offense. Even that Patriots offensive juggernaut that won every single regular season crumbled in the Super Bowl because the Giants were able to pressure Brady all day.

Problem with a defensive tilt is that it leaves less money for talent on offense. I'd like to think that the line can get the money and rely on younger talent for the backs and wideouts. It may look like it puts more pressure on Cam but if the defense can constantly give the ball back or give excellent field position, then it's the opposite. That happened to some extent last season and if it was any team other than the Broncos in the SB, it may have been enough.

Basically, grab guys that will work in the trenches on both sides.

I'm a defensive minded guy as well. Case in point, your Patriots references. A great defense will always beat a great offense. But that's also proving the point that you need a great o-line. The Patriots line in those two Super Bowls was small and imp-ish.

Basically, I'm a trenches guy. I truly believe that to win consistently you need a great line on both sides of the ball. Then, you need a great QB behind that line and one stud in the back seven on defense. I mean, we went to a Super Bowl with Greg Favors at SLB. The good news is we have Cam and Luke, we just need the big boys in front of them. OT and DE is of the highest priority.

Since 2011 we have used

2 first round picks on offense, 4 on defense

2 second round picks on offense, 4 on defense

1 third round pick on offense, 3 on defense

3 forth round picks on offense, 4 on defense

Just completely utterly lopsided. This front office has avoided offense like a plague.  No QB in NFL history has gotten less help than Cam.  Straight up disgraceful

Offense : $74.1m

Defense: $43.7m

We are 10th in the league in offensive spending.

I would like to see us draft some O-lineman but this idea that the offense is ignored is a bit overstated around here.

Garrett is not in the same stratosphere as Peppers as prospect.

I would take a any OT really, since it would be a MAJOR of what we got now

Okay honest question. What is all the hype with Peppers? I mean I see him make plays at LB but he is 205lbs. So will he be an NFL safety? If so then why isn't he playing there now?

Is that suppose to sway my point? We are paying Cam over 20 million a year

And Luke 12m.  There is more then 8m difference there.  Even the years Cam was on a rookie contract more money was spent on the offense.

I'm not trying to sway anyone, just giving some numbers so people can make informed decisions.

For me its....

Garrett (doubt we are picking high enough to draft him) - Beast, game changer on the edge - my favorite overall player in this draft.

Fournette - Biggest playmaker on O. Seeing what Zeke did in Big D this year, I'd love the Bell-Peterson hybrid of Fournette. Just needs to work on his receiving skills more.

.....

Adams/Peppers/Cook - Either of these 3 would solidify their respective units on our team. Adams is my fave of the three as he can play high, low, wherever and is a magnetic playmaker to give us a potential Eric Berry behind our young CBs. Peppers is the hot name and can do it all, but I feel like he might be the safety-version of Shaq.... versatile, but where does he play?  Cook was my favorite RB last year and most of this year. Different style than Fournette. Cook can catch out of the backfield, pass-pro and is a homerun hitter.... thinking Melvin Gordon but shiftier.

Budda Baker - Living in Seattle I got to watch a ton of UW games and have seen him live. Dude is all over the place, though I wonder where he fits in the NFL. I'd like him at safety, but he could slot in better at the nickel.  Not sure, but Baker fits well with that 'hybrid' defender like the Honey Badger.

I wish there was an OT worthy of the top-15, but I'm nervous. It is still early and there's a bunch of workouts, winter games, combine, etc. to shake some out.  Totally agree with the others that the college OT prospects are not prepared for the NFL.
