Anyone have a problem with the OT rules?

Heard people talking about how the OT rules are not fair to the team that loses the coin toss, because if they allow a td the game is over... some want the NFL to adopt the college rules.

Me personally, I think that if you want a chance to get the ball back your defense should actually play defense.

Your last sentence hit the nail on the head. This isn't college it is the National Football League, these guys are professional's. The stakes should be higher and these guys are capable of making a stop if their coach has a good game plan and if they execute it effectively.

Pretty sure several Falcon fans have a problem with it right now.

But frankly, so do I.

The obvious and most fair solution, as many have mentioned, is to guarantee each team one possession and then send it to sudden death if it's tied after that.

I like that

Personally, I like the sudden death aspect and wouldn't change a thing.  I was okay with old rules.

Each team had 60 minutes to win outright.

As stated, defense is just as much a part of the game as offense.  Get a stop or least force a FG.  Feel this way regardless of teams or outcome but Falcons in particular have no gripe, giving up a 28-3 lead speaks for itself.

And I disagree. Baseball has extra innings in which both teams get a chance to bat. Basketball has extra time until a victor is determined but both teams get a chance on offense. Both teams in soccer get a chance to score, as do both teams in hockey. Football is the only one in which there is no guarantee that both teams will get a chance to play to score, and it's kind of really stupid considering College does.

Damn, for some reason the baseball reference made it click for me.   I'm on the "both teams get a chance" side now.

Glad the Falcons lost, but college definitely has the better overtime rules.  Back in the old days when defense ruled, the current system was ok.  But the NFL has changed the rules to favor the offense so much that the coin toss plays to much of a role in determining the winner.    Each team should have the same chance in ot, period.

Defense is completely removed from the equation in soccer and hockey OT and baseball, by nature of only being able to score on offense, requires it. Basketball's format is similar to baseball's.

I personally think the NFL's format is fine. If you want to win, prevent a TD and get your offense the ball back. Would people be saying that NE deserved another drive if the Falcons D had managed to score a TD on that drive?

A debate as old as the game itself.

College rules are sweet but it's a different game.  Putting an NFL offense on the 25 is putting the defense at a huge disadvantage.

I do agree both teams should touch the ball but if you can't even hold them to a field goal I think you should probably lose anyway.

Unless of course it's a Mike Shula offense, then the defense of the other team would be at an advantage because we can't figure out how to get the fug into the endzone.
