The quickest way to describe a fix: We need to shore up both lines at the perimeter.  OTs and DEs all day...and add a safety.

Thats actually a really good way to put it... nice! Saftey would be nice but not totally nessesary to get a dominant one. If we get two good DEs (or one great DE) we just need a serviceable SS.

We made it in 2013 and 2015 with scrubs, outcasts and JAGs.

What is your definition of "making it" or "cutting it?" what's good enough? Just making the playoffs? fug that, was any of that enough to WIN a superbowl?

Thats the whole point, you can put the franchise on cruise control, play it safe with your own guys and occasionally bargain bin FAs but will it get you a championship? Our franchise history says no. And the answer will continue to be no until we actually win one. And I bet we'll have at least two major key acquisitions to get it.

If you never take any risks or really put yourself out there, you may have occasional success but don't expect to get what you really want.  More likely you'll just be getting more of the same if you keep repeating the same actions you will get the same results.

If your gauge is set on superbowl or fail, then you are going to encounter a lot of dissapointing seasons.

Only the Pats reach that measuring stick consistently since 2000 and they are 5-12 since 2000 (success vs non-success)

There are 31 other teams that didn't win it this year and there will be the same number next year.

We could field a superbowl capable team next year and have a random call in the 2nd quarter of the NFC Championship game go against us and ultimately cost the game.

Doesn't mean that the FO or coaches are failures.

Their jobs are to put us in position to compete for a championship.

With the parody in the league, a good night's rest or favorable winds could be the difference in a ring or a loss.

That is an exaggeration... but it is to illustrate the point that we are more-than-capable of fielding a championship caliber team next year... and they can be championship caliber without winning a championship.

I didn't say anything about multiple super bowls. I mean getting ONE super bowl . ONE. The point I'm trying to make in general is whatever the hell they're doing hasn't worked yet.

I assume you are a world champion?

I don't think that we HAVE to go out and make a ton of splashy FA signings, but I do hope that we go after some guys who are a notch above the types of FAs we have gone after during Gettleman's tenure. As much as I'd love to see us go after guys like Eric Berry and/or Alshon Jeffrey, I honestly doubt it happens. However, maybe guys like Jonathan Cyprien and/or Robert Woods? Yeah, give me that.

The Patriots have good coaching and Tom Brady. They let their expensive FA's walk and pick up 2nd and 3rd tier guys and turn em into cogs in their machine.  They always draft late in the first.

So, coaching and an accurate QB.  This is the combo that NE uses, not buying up all FA's and high draft picks

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
