Do We Need a Speed WR in this Draft?

We need to improve our receiving corps, as others have pointed out. And no, it doesn't have to be with the fastest guy in the draft, but our target should have above average speed, good hands, and smooth route running.

That probably means we need to jump on one in the 2nd round.

Right....so you believe him?

So, you obviously don't...but I don't think he'd say it if there wasn't just a teeny weeny bit of truth to it.

Who else in this draft would you choose to fill the Ted Ginn Jr. role as a deep threat besides John Ross.

Ginn has exceptional speed, though he's really not the complete playmaker that Ross appears to be. But those injuries...

Damiere Byrd has exceptional speed, but I just can't put too much stock into him, being that the coaches don't seem to have that kind of faith in him. Basically, I'll believe it when I see it.

Although not as fast, but still very much fast enough are guys like KD Cannon and Curtis Samuel.

And with that being said...

Zay Jones

Cooper Kupp

Curtis Samuel

Dede Westbrook

Travin Dural

Chris Godwin

Ryan Switzer

Artavis Scott

John Ross won with speed, but he also won with routes and speed manipulation. He even talked about working out with DeSean Jackson, and how he took his advice about doing the little things to make you a better player. He can get separation in his routes.

Gettleman just dropped the ball  revamping the receiving core (pun intended). Funchess was a shaky pick because we already had a receiver like him and didn't need another one for this offense. I just don't know how him and kelvin are gonna work on the field together.

I think Zay Jones or Dede Westbrook would be a nice choice with our low 2nd. Probably get Baker or Obi with pick 40. I want Fournette or Howard with 8 , I'll be upset if we end up picking Allen, Charlton , or Barnett unless we trade down.

This is old news and debated weeks ago. But to your point, yes we need a slot receiver and another tight end. If Shepard and Johnson aren't the slot guy then draft one. I like Howard at 8 and McCaffrey at the bottom of the first. Or McCaffrey at 8 and Njoku at 40.

I think whatever we do the offense is the side we need to emphasize. But if saving money is an issue we will go DE or DT since it is hard to.pick up reasonably priced DEs or DTs in free agency who aren't old or in decline.

We need a real deep threat, Westbrook, Ross or Henderson

IDC what Zay Jones ran at the combine his tape has slot receiver written all over it. Cam throws one of the best deep balls in the NFL and this franchise is dumb enough not to use it.

I really am struggling with finding anyone better to fit that role for us than Corey Davis.

I'd love it if someone could do a compare & contrast post on Corey Davis, Zay Jones, Ross and maybe one or two of the other top WR prospects, ranking them on

  • Speed
  • Route running / separation
  • Hands (catch percentage)
  • Durability
  • Fit in our offense

For me, Ross is off my board (at least in the 1st round) due to his knees / injury risk.  Davis seems promising but it's hard for me to imagine DG going with him at #8.  Seems like one of other players we are likely to have ranked higher (Thomas, Adams, Fournette, Howard) might be available at #8.  Barnett & Lattimore might be above Davis on our Board and have a pretty high chance of being there at #8...

I don't watch much college football at all. (Have enough trouble watching NFL games here in West Africa)  Don't know enough about Zay Jones and any of the other potential round 2 WR prospects....
