Ranking the Panthers' NFL draft priorities by position

1. Defensive end

The Panthers took a big gamble last season by not drafting an edge rusher, instead putting faith in Kony Ealy that he’d build on his remarkable Super Bowl performance and blossom into a Pro Bowl caliber defensive end.

That didn’t happen, and so Carolina has been set back at arguably the most important position on defense. You simply can’t have too many good edge defenders in today’s NFL.

Fortunately, this is a deep class of them and the Panthers can find dynamic players in several rounds. While a lot of people are predicting they’ll use their No. 8 overall pick on a defensive end (or even trade up to No. 2) to get one, it may be a smarter move to hold off and wait to pick one or two in the middle rounds, given how deep this class is at the position. That would give Carolina more flexibility to plug some of the other holes on their roster.

DE can't be the highest need for this year anyway. From a long term perspective? I suppose . But immediately in terms of this season, I don't see how you'd put it at #1 unless we're not getting any production out of a pretty good rotation of veteran DEs.
