Panthers Linebacker Logjam

Jeremy Igo

Recommended Posts

10 Linebackers are currently listed on the Carolina Panther roster.

48 Bazzie, Alex

50 Boulware, Ben

57 Cash, Jeremy

58 Davis, Thomas

53 Jacobs, Ben

49 Kragen, Kyle

59 Kuechly, Luke

55 Mayo, David

52 Norris, Jared

54 Thompson, Shaq

I think we can all agree on the locks...

Kuechly, Davis,Thompson, Mayo

That leaves 6 guys for a likely 2 open spots. Talk about camp competition.

Who do you like?

Given the versatility of both Samuel and CMC, it could mean that we carry one less WR than usual and add in another area......given ST prowess of this group, it could mean 7 LB on the squad.

@Jeremy Igo why are we assuming Mayo is a given?

Because of performances like this:

Top defensive grades:

LB David Mayo, 87.2

The Panthers’ defense were able to force a few big plays to end Bucs drives, but the play of LB David Mayo was most notable, flashing the kind of ability he showed in college and suggesting that maybe the Panthers have had the wrong linebacker starting in place of Luke Kuechly with A.J Klein. Mayo had a team-high four defensive stops despite playing just 21 snaps, and allowed only five yards in coverage, while Klein has a season grade of 44.6.

Could be. Safety could also use some much needed depth as well. Hell, corner too for that matter.

His play is pretty much the reason we felt we could let Klein walk in FA.

Personally, I really like what I saw from Norris last year. Although I admit, it was limited, he seemed to have that awareness you look for in a Mike, and he brought the hammer when wrapping up his tackles and was solid. So, my choice (and most likely an unpopular one) would be Norris and Jacobs, unless the coaches feel Cash has gotten better on STs than Jacobs at this time. I can see Boulware and Kragen going to the PS to learn for a year or two, unless they get plucked, which I feel is highly doubtful.

    • Only thing I really see it doing is possibly making Tepper listen if a different play caller can't run the offense because of limitations. New hire, someone who hasn't been watching Bryce for the past 3 years up close may be able to talk some sense if he sees that he isn't able to get the job done.
