Organizations say more with actions than interviews. General manager Dave Gettleman declared a statement of purpose by drafting Swiss Army Knife back Christian McCaffrey eighth overall in April, then doubling down with multi-talented speedster Curtis Samuel in the second round. Size for the sake of size -- embodied by wideouts Kelvin Benjaminand Devin Funchess -- represents the old way of thinking. Speed, versatility and creating easier throws for Newton -- that's the Panthers' blueprint for the future. The transition comes a year too late.

For proof, just dial up some 2016 Panthers pass plays on NFL Game Pass using the Coaches Film, allow Newton time to set up in the pocket, then hit pause and try to find an open receiver. (Note: This is a terrible game for anyone but masochistic Panthers fans.)

Relying on Cam's ability to complete low-percentage throws down the field was not a sustainable offensive strategy. His accuracy was too streaky, his receivers and offensive line not talented enough. Newton has the arm strength to throw the ball 60 yards off his back foot with a partially torn rotator cuff, but he shouldn't need to use that arm strength on every pass. For a team that prides itself on toughness, it was amazing to see how rarely Carolina won individual matchups up front or on the outside.

I guess Rosenthal was yet another one of the many who believed their lying eyes about the Shula offense, because we have been assured by our Head Coach that "the offense was always designed to get the ball out of Newton's hands faster".

Hang on. They actually said that this offense was always designed to get the ball out fast?

Woooow....

Yes, indeed.

Speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Monday, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said that the offense was always designed to get the ball out of Newton's hands faster but that it could become a reality thanks to the addition of running back Christian McCaffrey and hybrid pass catcher Curtis Samuel.

I'm betting he said that with a total Ron face too.

Just think, these are OUR coaches. We got to the Superbowl on pure talent. Imagine if we actually had a coaching staff that was cerebral.

This is too broad of a statement. There were some amazing game plans throughout that year, and some great calls that put us in position to win. I'm not defending Shula, but he told this coaching staff and management that we needed to evolve on offense after 2015 by gaining new playmakers. That teams would be able to catch up to this offense. We did nothing, and then add in the injuries and it was a mess. Our coaches are not elite but they're not idiots.

I want to believe that so much but I can't. Perhaps we're not stupid but perhaps we're a little incompetent. The way I see it, if you're a good coach, you'll work with what you got. Shula begging for more playmakers says to me that he needs elite players at every position to succeed. If he knew Cam needed to get the ball out quicker then why we're no changes made? Hell, I'd argue we went backwards to be honest. We stuck with the same formula that got us killed at the Superbowl.

Gettleman was looking to axe Shula according to the rumors. Rivera basically saved him. No more excuses. No more using Sunshine as the #1 on screens. No more relying on Cam's brute horsepower in the redzone. No more 4-5 step dropbacks on low percentage plays. No more back to back up the gut runs for negative yardage and then hail mary the poo out of it.

If Shula even has ANY true creativity, this will be the year he showcases because his job is on the line along with Rivera's.

It's a talent driven league first and foremost. I agree that if Shula doesn't show out this year he needs to be gone. Hell, I'd be down with a midseason firing if it's a mess again. Too much firepower and diversity on offense for any excuses this year.

Yall need to quit dwelling and hating the past and look firswrd to the exciting and dominate year will have

coaches learn

players get better

additions are made

just like the total abomination of 2010 gave us Cam,

the abomination of last season netted us two top playmakers and a perspective to build off of.

a lot to be excited about this season. Top down the team and FO seem to be on the same page this season. A mission to finish what 2015 left open

Coaches can only do so much. We had the worst ranked WR's in terms of getting separation last year. You can't throw quick strikes to slow WR's who are constantly blanketed.

Our first 2 picks this year were clearly addressing that issue. I believe our coaches when they say the offensive plan was to have more quick releases, but the personnel didn't match the scheme.
