What does an NFL GM do, anyway?

I'm not happy about Hurney coming back even for a year. He was JR's yes-man. Signed big contracts and cut veterans. Nobody remembers what happened in 2009? Every vet except Steve Smith was cut. Cut. At JR's direction because that year only there would be no cap hit. Which is why Fox was so unhappy. I liked Gettleman because he wasn't a yes-man, he offset JR in that regard. A lot can be done in a year to send this team down the wrong road - again.

It's a stretch to say Hurney was a good GM. Half the job is managing the cap and he was poo at that.

However, Dave gets a lot of credit for doing an average job. We went 17-2 one year, awesome! We also went 6-10 and 7-8-1 (squeaking into the playoffs on technicality) in two of his additional seasons. I'm also not giving him credit for the 12-4 season because he inherited that team and the playmakers on that team (outside of Mike Mitchell, KK, and Star). I know that if we make the playoffs this year with Hurney people won't give him credit for it, so I'm not giving Dave credit for the team he inherited.

DG literally got the team out of cap hell and had one amazing year, that's about it.

Other than that he's handled some business situations pretty horribly and when you aren't winning and you treat people like that, you are going to get canned.

The difference in Belichek treating players like poo and DG treating players like poo is the record of the teams. If you do it, you better pray your team performs.

Hurney had three winning years in the eleven he was here.  Hardly a badge of honor.

Calling Marty's results as GM mediocre is probably too generous a term.

Gettleman's teams managed to go to the playoffs 3 out of the 4 years while having one hand tied behind his back thanks to Marty putting the team into cap hell.

Anyone here under the delusion that Hurney is anything other than JR's yes man returning to send us back into cap hell for another 5 years... or more... needs to review this link http://grantland.com/features/the-roster-moves-made-panthers-gm-incompetent-best/

I don't think Hurney is a good GM by any stretch.

I also don't think Gettleman was either though.

He's a savvy businessman who is good with finances and finding talent. However, his relationship and people skills are horrible. A lot of people here don't and won't place value on those two things because we are fans and we want results. But we obviously know JR cares about those skills that DG seems to be lacking them.

JR cares about those skills

Clearly there have been a few high profile players each season that have gotten their feelings hurt by DG's approach to roster changes/contract negotiations.

I don't doubt DG's "my way or the highway" approach was a culture shock to many players after Hurney's failure to cut the team's dead weight or negotiate a contract without busting the budget.

If I were looking for a big payday, I'd much prefer to deal with Hurney rather than DG.  Who wouldn't?

Gettleman was specifically brought here to end the Mom and Pop approach that prevented this team from reaching the next level... or so many of us thought.

JR seemed to do the right thing and back off for awhile, but it now appears that he couldn't restrain himself and allowed some current and former players to do an end around on DG.

That is really too bad for the younger players and the fans, because this organization was finally out of the cap hell Hurney and JR's poor contract decisions had put it in.

Just a few days ago, it appeared that all DG's hard work was about to pay off in a big way for the team and the fans.  Alas, it was not to be, the meddling JR was back in force and he had his yes man, Marty Hurney, by his side.

Some here seem to think this sort of player angst is somehow unique to Carolina.  Trust me, living here in Seattle there seems to be a few players every year bitching about the very same issues.

I don't know if Gettleman will decide to take on another GM job at this point in his life or not.  Especially if he has to deal with another meddling owner like JR.

However, in his short time with the Panthers organization DG was recognized by the league as GM of the Year, cleaned up our books and brought in a mix of talented youth and veteran experience that resulted in the team having a depth of talent never achieved previously in the history of the franchise.  In short DG has set this team up for success, something his predecessor and successor as GM cannot say despite having 7 additional years to accomplish it.

I'm sure there are more than a few teams that would trade their GMs for Gettleman in a heartbeat if they could.

What we are left with is a reactionary owner who values being adored by a few of his players more than winning a championship for Panther Nation.

and fixed the massive shitstorm of stupid disgusting contracts that clown Hurney handed out

Bill Voth keeps saying those massive contracts handed out were on JR. I stated it for years that 2010-11 were all on JR because it just made logical sense. Voth continues to confirm it as fact since he has actual inside knowledge

I don't really think you can point to Hurney being here for 11 years as a sign of success given that most of those years did not produce winning seasons.

He lasted as long as he did because Richardson values loyalty over performance. It's not really a feather in his cap.

macaroni?

Giving up draft picks for mediocre players to reach for them should tell you his talent evaluation is sub par. I don't want him near this organization.  He's a huge part of the reason this team went to poo. Giving huge contracts, not finding complementing players,  never hitting on lower draft picks. The 2009 draft was horrible. Cam and Luke basically fell to his lap and he still couldn't manage getting weapons or a libe because guess what?  There was no money left because of bad contracts..

So no. The panic is warranted and no,  he shouldn't be here. No one should be pleased to have him back. That would be sadistic as fug.

Curious, if he singlehandedly put us into a 2-14 season, does he at least get credit for lifting us out of that 1-15 year that happened before most of you started taking the Panthers seriously?

I think he will be nothing more than a seat warmer, and really won't do much.

So the combination of JR and Hurney equals dog poo contracts.

I feel better.

Wait a minute....
