Rivera on blowing leads

I couldn't disagree with this more...  this is the EXACT attitude RR has and it sucks.  I'd much rather lose trying to win than lose trying not to lose.

I fuging hate the Patriots with a passion, but you watch them play... they don't go soft and hope they don't fug up at the end of games... they play to win.

The players KNOW that Rivera doesn't trust them in big situations... this attitude is like a cancer to confidence and he's done it ever since he's been our head coach.

Yes because I can tell that the players are playing like they aren't trusted to make plays.

You can roll your eyes all you want...  go back and watch games since he's been coach...  it's a disease.  poo, these last two games that we played great in... same, old, poo.

Nothing has changed.

We get a lead, we go soft.

He said "we" several times and said "guys".  He did not say the "players."  I am pretty sure he meant the coaching staff.

Probably the biggest thing was guys trying to do more than they needed to,” Rivera said. “We tried a little too much to keep it in front of us instead of being aggressive like we had been for three quarters.

“I thought we were just trying to keep it in front of us at that point, and it cost us.”

Is he serious?  You're the head coach.  I doubt the players would decide to play soft if someone isn't instructing them to.   Be accountable Ron!

First thing mentioned was deflecting to players.

at least he realizes it's an issue

Absolutely. But hasn't he been talking about understanding these game management miscues and adapting accordingly every year? He's talked about it enough times to make your head spin. But actually implementing it? Not so much. That's where we keep running into the same wall. To say it is frustrating would be an understatement.

There certainly are a whole lot of folks up in here who seem to embrace this line of thinking.

The team is 4-1. I don't care, did you see them give up points. I did not appreciate them doing so. I expect better, and I will rail, and shout my displeasure from the rooftops.

Style points mean nothing. Wins are the only stat that matters. At the end of the year the NFL is not going to adjust our win total because we gave up some 4th quarter points. lol

When you play the Panthers teams know Ron is going to ease up and try to coast to the finish. Teams know they will always have a chance for a comeback.

As much as I can't stand them, you know once the Taints or Pats get a 20 point lead they are going to keep pouring it on. Teams know it's going to be extremely difficult to beat those teams once they're up on you.

It's about finishing the game and not putting the team in a position to lose. RR doesn't finish opposing teams and that's a problem whether you're 16-0 or 2-14.

This has been an issue since Ron got here, so its nothing new. But when you see the Panthers up by 20, you know a comeback is coming. Hell, most of us expect it.

Didn't we let the Bucs go like 80 yards with no timeouts for a game winning TD in like 2011  2012 under Rivera?

edit:

Quote

Freeman quickly led the Bucs 80 yards on seven plays in 50 seconds, despite not having any timeouts. Along the way, the Bucs benefited from a personal foul penalty on linebacker Thomas Davis for hitting a defenseless receiver.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
