Interesting stat about our pass defense

Recommended Posts

We are 4th in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game at 181 YPG. Makes our pass defense sound pretty decent, right?

However, we are 27th in the NFL in passer rating allowed at 100.4 and 28th in completion percentage allowed at 67%

Sums up the gripes we all have in relation to our defensive play calling. Simply prevent the big play and play unassertively. I miss the aggressiveness Josh Norman brought to this secondary. Dare I say I even sorta miss Tre Boston and his ability to make a big, game changing play or hit, even if it meant whiffing on one or two in the process.

Things to factor in as well:

-We are also allowing short fields due to the offense and ST

-Our offensive style is a clock killer and both teams average fewer overall drives per game, limiting yard potential

-We have an aggressive style with a secondary that starts Jairus Byrd, Colin Jones, and Daryl Worley (Now Seymour)...they will get burnt when we blitz Munnerlyn, Thompson, TD, etc.

-The DBs still play the softest zone in the league with an aggressive front 7.  It should offset but has it's downfalls.

Overall, the DL is killing it, but the LBs are actually underperforming in Wilks D, and the secondary are just tacklers or guys who can run a receiver out of bounds.

We obviously don't have the right pieces in place on defense, but I think we all know the o-line is what is killing this team. The defense is decent enough to get by if he offense will pull it's weight.

In looking at our secondary we're lacking in violence and ball hawking, so we're not generating turnovers. For instance Peanut would use violence, the 'Peanut punch', to generate turnovers, and Minter would use big hits. Norman would use his great ball hawking skills to get interceptions. We don't have a violent DB, and we don't have a ball hawk DB.

Am I taking a shot at Bradberry? No. Bradberry is useful in that teams don't want to try him deep. He's big and athletic, and he can run with WRs down the field and go up with them and fight for the pass. That's good. The problem is that the rest of our DBs don't worry anyone on any level. Pass happy teams will eat them alive and it doesn't matter if Bradberry's guy isn't doing much deep. The other scrubs will give up enough that the game will get out of hand.

If our o-line wasn't emergency level bad, then I would look to the draft to improve the secondary. We don't have that luxury. The o-line will eat up our draft picks and we really have no choice. The o-line has to be addressed.

Wait, you guys want me to complain about the defense?

We want to complain about everything.  Honestly Wilks D has alot more pressure on the QB, but he sacrifices coverage to get it done.  I think McDermotts D was more balanced.  But, WTF do I know

From what I can tell, Bradbury has been lights out this season. Team don't even throw his way during games. I can't even remember many times when I've heard his name mentioned during a game...which means he is really doing his job. If we only had that ball Hawking, turnover maker in the secondary with him. Maybe when Coleman gets back healthy...
