Replacement Possibilities

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Don't have time right now to go too in-depth, but here are some options

QB COACH

Wade Wilson: most obvious choice, has history with both Rivera and Ron Turner from Chicago; could also be an OC option (hasn't done it before but has 17 years as a QB coach)

Cameron Turner:  current assistant QB coach, Ron Turner's son, Norv's nephew; only five years coaching experience

Scott Turner:  Norv's son and a previous Panther assistant under Rivera; more experience than his brother ; could be an OC option but hasn't done that before ; QB coach more likely

Geep Chryst: coached TEs with the Panthers for five years; was an offensive assistant with the Bears when Rivera was a player

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Norv Turner: the name most people immediately think of; Rivera considers him a close friend and mentor from their Charger days; could also be a QB coach option

Ron Turner: Norv's brother, a longtime Rivera colleague and already on the Panthers staff as a consultant

Rob Chudzinski: Rivera's first OC, available because the Colts fired Chuck Pagano and are targeting Josh McDaniels who wouldn't likely keep him

Brad Childress: Rivera connection; was the Eagles OC when Rivera was their LB coach;  WCO guy ; reputed to be an a--hole ; says he's retiring but some sense he's being forced out

Mike McCoy: loads of history with the Panthers experience but having none with Ron Rivera makes it seem unlikely

Greg Roman: another guy with Panthers history (not as much as McCoy) but no Rivera history and just re-signed with Baltimore as TE coach

Eric Bienemy: played for the Eagles during Rivera's final year as LB coach, so only a shirt tail connection; has been linked with other possible OC jobs already (Bienemy got the Chiefs OC gig)

Ken Zampese: doesn't have a direct Rivera connection but his dad was Norv's mentor; I believe he interviewed for a position here once before (digging for info on it)

Edgar Bennett:  recently dumped as Packers OC; played against Rivera in Ron's final year as a player and played one year with the Bears when Rivera was on staff

John Matsko:  internal option; already listed as run game coordinator; has served as an OC twice at the college level (one school being UNC) but is better suited as an OL coach

Jim Skipper:  hasn't been an OC before but was  head coach for a USFL team;  wasn't retained by Rivera when he first took over

POSSIBLE, BUT LESS LIKELY OPTIONS

Brian Schottenheimer: has been around, most recently Colts QB coach working under Chudzinski (which is his only Rivera connection); dad was a good coach but never worked with Rivera

Jim Caldwell: recently fired Lions head coach has a good rep as an OC but no history with Rivera that I know of

John DeFilippo:  Eagles QB coach is already a hot name as a head coaching candidate; unlikely the Eagles let him go for an OC job; no Rivera connection

Jim Bob Cooter: would love the choice but he has no Rivera connections and the Lions are likely gonna keep him

Jeremy Bates: Jets QB coach has traveled around and has a decent rep; worked with Bears but long after Rivera was gone

Jon Kitna:  currently getting a look from the Bengals as their QB coach; No Rivera connection

Joe Philbin: hot name as an OC but seems more likely to return to Green Bay; no Rivera connection (Philbin is officially the Packers new OC)

Cam Cameron: has NFL history but none with Rivera that I know of; has been an effective OC before ; recently let go by LSU

Frank Reich: Eagles could conceivably part ways with him to promote DeFilippo but that's a stretch; connected to Panthers but not Rivera

UPDATE: OC Candidates who both fit Rivera's description of having "early early early" college experience but spending most of their careers in the pros and have worked with him in the past...

- Norv Turner (Oregon, USC)

- Ron Turner (Arizona, Pacific College)

- Rob Chudzinki (Miami)

- Brad Childress (Illinois)

- John Matsko (Miami OH, UNC)

- Jim Skipper (Cal Poly-Pomona, San Jose State)

Hopefully, during the interview.

Ron makes the possibly OC's show how they will maximize Cam's skill set, and not just basic NFL concepts.

I want a creative guy to get the best out of Cam, and has a vision for how to make Cam better, while using his skill set.

Wished I could sit in on these interviews.

Eric Bieniemy is another good option. Coached and groomed AP and has done an excellent job in KC with Kareem Hunt. Would love to see what he does with a mobile QB like Cam and CMC

Think I read he's likely to be take over as OC position at KC given Nagy's departure and QB Coach Brad Childress retiring.

Matsko would be worse than Shula. He coordinated a run game that was 31st in the league if you take out Cam's rushing.

    • I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......
    • Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
    • Nah we just talking about giving a platform and normalizing predators (who both beat women) opinions and celebrating it if it fits your narrative.  If that's fun I'm fine being a miserable fug by not supporting P.O.S like that. N b4 you call me a libtard or some other dumb ish know I'm an Anarchist/Libertarian and believe both these dudes should get a complete ass whooping (at min) or something worse for what they have done to women in this world.
