Now, how is this 23-year-old not worth further exploration?

@*FreeFua* was my reason for starting this thread,  but any ol' Funchess hater can answer.

I mean,  the kid came in raw as hell at the position,  and needed to  learn a bunch.  He showed promise his rookie year with a 100 yard game.  He had a down year,  along with the entire offense.  This season wasn't perfect,  but the difference between Funchess the first couple of years and 2015 is almost palpable. You can literally see the improvement in route running and using his frame, but yet you still talk crap about the kid.

Actually,  I want to see more.  There's no reason to believe he has hit his ceiling---no reason in the world.  Funchess hasn't even hit his stride.

Funchess will continue to get better.  Poor guy played through tough injuries late this season.  He just wasn’t himself the last few games.  I hope he gets healthy and comes out ready to dominate next season.

He was injured for almost half the season - and it was a shoulder injury none the less! I may be wrong but when your job is to go up and catch the ball it may be a little difficult when your shoulder isn't healthy. I think he has the talent to be a Mushin Muhammad. I'm not as down on receivers as everyone else - I think a veteran presence like Mike Wallace would be exactly what we need to bring in next year.

It was 3rd and 3 on the NE 46. Game tied at 30 with 1:05 remaining. Funchess hobbled onto the field and caught a five yard out to pick up the first down and gave us a chance to pick up a few more yards for Gano instead of punting and hoping for overtime.

Funchess has heart, he's willing to learn, Cam trusts him. He's absolutely worth further exploration.

Full disclaimer: I've done a complete 180 on this guy since last summer.

Idk what you mean by further exploration? Like you want people to give him more clout? The team is sticking with funchess, obviously. Dude had his best season yet, but still dropped some passes and disappeared in games. And obviously he didn’t even try for that last throw by Cam in the endzone. Work in progress but seem like a solid number 2 moving forward

I've always liked Funchess and never really understood why people were so down on him.  I don't think he's going to be a superstar or anything but he can be a solid WR.  I really think people tend to forget just how young this dude is and he was raw as fug as a WR coming into the league.  Hell, just the fact he's already as good as he is now is amazing IMO.

The ceiling is the roof for this kid.

He could barely lift his arm. Not sure what you were expecting him to do on that play. The defender was in front of him blocking his view of the ball and his shoulder was hurt.

Funchess has improved but he has a long way to go and a short time to get there

time the Panthers do not have

he is a#2 at best and far too much was given up to get him

The Panthers need speed, polished route runners, with hands and tough experienced  WRs

they need their Julio Jones and since the only drafted decent WR was in the Siefert era, get it from FA

Of course!!!!! That is the secret....go out and draft the Julio Jones that is available in every draft. Got it.

I think he’s a perfectly fine fit on the team, but I don’t think he’s #1 material. Sure he COULD be, but I don’t wanna bet on it. I wanna bring in at least two WRs to compete for that #1 spot. I want three WRs that can play starting roles. Right now Fundhess is a fine starter and could eventually be a fine #1, but I’d rather find a Smitty (in terms of being a game breaker and guy teams have to plan for) with Funchess filling the Moose role (which appears to be his path).

    • WR: Nico, Woods, Tank (R) TE: Schultz OL: Tunsil/Howard/Deiter/Mason/Fant vs. WR: Chark, Thielen, Mingo (R) TE: Hurst OL: Icky/Zavala (R)/Bozeman/Jensen (R)/Moton   Panthers' had the better OL before losing BC week 1 and AC week 4 which is kind of ironic considering how in the following year DB went down in W1 and Shaq in W4 resulting in the defense going all to Hell. CJ has done amazing in Houston, but he also wasn't asked to carry Zavala, Jensen, Mingo, Hurst, and Chark as a rookie.
    • Past 5 seasons, IMO CJ Stroud and Joe Burrow are the 2 best young QBs that have emerged in the league in that window.  They also didn’t need vets to be their primary pass catchers.  They helped fellow youngsters be great at WR.   almost all the other young QBs have been paired up with vets in their top options….and haven’t been as promising.  so it isn’t Madden.  But the league hasn’t played out as you suggest it does.   Good QBs make others around them better.
    • In 2023 their roster wasn’t stacked. They nailed the poo out of the 2023 draft and since they knew Davis Mills wasn’t the guy, they tanked properly to get pick 2. They also took Cleveland’s ridiculous offer for Watson unlike us with Burns. Houston received enough draft capital to jump up to 3 while picking up the right guys in Anderson and Stroud. The Texans were not stacked or better than us in 2023. They had 11 total wins from 2020 to 2022. They didn’t have a terrible front office so they made sure they got their QB of the future while tanking well and getting more draft picks. They are a textbook study of what we should have done in 2022/2023 offseason even though people in here still think tanking is a bad word and our culture would be bad if we were the Texans. We literally had the chance to be the Texans right now and fuged it up.
