Hurney is "the worst GM in the NFL"

Tomorrow.   Using the same criteria it wasn't very good either.

Not really possible to use the same criteria. If you give an A to an Evan Mathis, who was useless to the franchise, due to doing well later on, how do you judge players with only 1-5 years in the NFL.  Barnidge is a B? with 18 receptions in 4 seasons with team?

Don’t get me wrong. Great effort and agree with most. Just rather stick with their value to Panthers.

Yep, they pretty much started with Delhomme.

An aging QB single-handedly torpedoes a playoff game with 18 turnovers and gets signed to a high value contract extension. I was learning algebra at the time and still knew that was a horrible decision.

When I heard about it, I literally said,  "What the f**k?"

It still baffles the mind.

He has had time to reflect upon the footsteps toward his demise,  so I can only hope that he learned something.

Honestly,  the importance of managing the cap is the only thing that I hope Hurney took from Dave Gettleman---not necessarily the way that G-man went about it, but that it was central to the longer term health of the franchise as Getteleman believed.

Except that it started well before the strike.

JR took control well before the strike. JR was a micro manager and some of the best drafts and cap management came when he let go of the controls. With that said Hurney should not be retained simply because there are better options out there.

Mathis, Evan and Barnidge ecelled with other teams.  They were good players we just didn't use them correctly.  Make your own list.  I am ok with that.

I didn’t mean to knock it. It was great work. Just pointing out you can’t really use same criteria simply because of time frame.

You can't blame Hurney for the coaches not utilizing or developing these players correctly.  Other teams saw what our coaches didn't.

   Didn’t Hurney also cut Mathis?

I’m just going to be very interested in where the F’s are going to come from on the DG side? Because any player could still become an A or B based on a season in 2020.

Hurney claim to fame will be first round picks.  After that he basically sucks.

These all Hurney's picks from 2002-2012 out of 89 picks 40 were C or above while the other 49 were D's and F's.  There might a couple you could argue up or down a spot.  These are my grades based on how long they stayed with Carolina or excelled elsewhere.

2006 was his best year and sadly 2011after Cam he shyt the bed and was his worst.  He was atrocious in round two and with wide receivers.

This list is copied of the Panthers.com History page.

OVERALL GRADES FOR 89 PICKS FROM 2002 - 2012

A - 18 =  20.2% (9 OF THESE 1ST ROUNDERS)

B - 12 = 13.5%

C - 10 = 11.3%

D - 11 = 12.4%

F - 38 = 42.6%

GRADES IN RELATIVITY TO THE ROUND THEY WERE PICKED. (These are my grades I am sure you will have your own)

Regarding the grades, we see this threads all the time about Hurney or Gettleman.  Would be interesting to know how they compare against the rest of the league.  I would hazard a guess that the vast majority of draft picks don't spend more than a year or two in the NFL, so I was thinking that neither of our GM's was that bad when viewed objectively and compared to the rest of the league.  Would be nice to see some numbers, but in the past, I haven't been able to find anything.

Edited to add, I did find this article grading draft picks for the last five years prior to this season.  Not sure about their methodology, but the article aas us ranked second in the league.  Four of the five years were wiht Gettleman, but Hurney had the best year.  Ironically, he had two of the best (luke and norman) and two of the worst (Joe Adams and Silatolu).

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
