New Panthers DC Eric Washington gives an exclusive look on his plan for the Panthers defense:

The radio interview is very good. Here’s one part I especially thought was interesting:

Quote

It has to be in a situation or scenario where number 1 - we take advantage of the pressure.

We can’t hang our secondary out to dry by the pressure not being effective.

So, if we send an extra guy, that guy has to be a factor as far as the rush is concerned.

With context of me listening to the rest of the interview, it sounds like Washington wants to take a more fundamental and intelligent approach with this defense. He wants blitz’ that are intelligent and will be a factor, but seems to point that he wants to rely on our nasty front more-so than bringing guys in that’ll hurt our secondary.

Thoughts?

I feel like we biltzed way to much last season.  Worked well in some situations, but against players like Brees who like to get rid of the ball quickly, it left our secondary out to dry.  We either need better DBs or be more creative in how we rush the QB

And as far as our secondary is concerned, sure, they disappointed, but I can’t help but feel Wilks exacerbated the issue by making them do the impossible literally all last year, imo.

Not saying Wilks scheme is terrible. It’s actually a very good scheme with the right pieces. However, we didn’t have the stout secondary required for Wilks.

Washington understands wilks tried forcing on a scheme that just wasn’t the best for Carolina’s personnel, and I’m glad he’s looking to change that.

going to be real interesting next year. Wilks has a defense that would work stupid good with his scheme (geez the things he could do with Budda Baker is already amazing in it of itself) and Washington gets to unlock Carolina’s true potential.

I think we blitzed BECAUSE our secondary couldn't cover for very long.

As disruptive as the blitz can be (the Steelers whole defense is built on that) it is always better if you can get pressure with just four guys.

To be clear, those four guys don't always have to be the defensive line.  You can still drop a lineman back and rush a linbacker or a DB, but generally it is your front four that should be getting most of the pressure.

Washington sounds like that's where he's thinking.

    • That's insane. That's getting into fuging Vince Carter territory.
    • I don't believe Bryce "can't see the middle of the field".  If that's true, then Canales, Morgan and Tepper are even bigger dipshits than I already think they are. We don't use the TE enough because every one of them on our roster would be the 3rd string TE on any other roster.  They all suck beyond belief. What investments?  T-Mac was a great pick (who I was wrong on), but other than that, we've not really done anything other than getting lucky that Rico Dowdle turned into Barry Sanders for 4 or 5 games running and catching the ball out of the backfield. There is nothing that says you can't line up Sadiq in the backfield and use him as an outlet for Bryce.  Look how the Colts used Warren a lot this year. One player on defense isn't going to make a difference on the score board, especially with Evero coaching.  This team is going to need to maintain possessions and score points to stay in games with a first-place tilt (Seahawks, Eagles, and Bears), plus the Ravens, Bengals, Lions, and Packers on the 2026 schedule.   Your post was solid though, good points by you and could be totally right, and I could be wrong.  But that's my $0.02 which is about what it's worth.
