Bill Barnwell: Five Moves Panthers Should Make

It's really a franchise embarrassment that we're waiting around for a crappy interim GM to finish being investigated for domestic violence when there are actual qualified candidates who want the job. This is literally wasted time that's putting us behind other teams in free agency.

As much as I love Norwell, it's much easier to find good guards than it is to find good NT's.

With that being said, I don't see either being retained.

This is absolutely the best time to sign Funchess to an extension before his value goes up any further.

I'm  also not convinced the team sells quickly.

We need more than just Funchess and extending him now would eat that cap space. We should see if Matt Kalil will restructure and have Ryan cut. Let Norwell and Star walk. We need two veteran WR or a another pass catching TE that no one has ever heard of. Cut Stew and I do like the idea of somehow getting CJ Anderson in here. Bring Kyle Fuller at CB and draft a safety high.

I agree .. Matt Kali deal is forcing you to let Nor well and Star walk..

I disagree. We can get out from under Kalil's contract after this season. You can structure contracts to minimize the first year cap hit if you need to due to a Matt Kalil type contract situation.

If we don't re-sign Norwell and Star (which I fully expect that to be the case), it's simply because we've decided that money is better spent elsewhere.

First priority in righting the ship is to get the team sold.  Hurney is under contract until June, so he's going to get paid regardless of what we do there.  No sense in hiring a new GM that may not share the new Owner's vision, so we should focus on selling the team, and then replacing Hurney.

The Peppers, Funchess, and Thompson ideas were straight from Captain Obvious.  Barnwell is just trying to fill space with these.

Letting both Norwell and Star walk?  That's crazy talk, both of them are better than whatever we can replace them with, and we're not rebuilding.  Butler is more likely to replace CJ than he is Star, unless we're changing our scheme and no one told me.  Moton could potentially step in for Norwell, but if we can keep either starter we should.

What Barnwell is missing is anything about beefing up the WR position (cut Sheppard, find this year's Jericho Cotchery), preparing for life without the Kalils (Matt needs to go after this year), and finding a solution at SS rather than betting on a 37 year old to turn back the clock twice.

Really lazy work on his part.

I actually like this . We can replace norwell with moton or a rookie and star can get replaced by a cheaper free agent and possibly butler

Hopefully we can draft a replacement for Kalil at tackle and move moton inside ...

Once again, I wouldn’t call a 14.7M cap hit as “getting out from under anything”. Nothing like 8M off the top(if he’s a June 1st, then 6.7M more in 2020) to help pay those 2nd and 3rd years since we went cheap on the 1st years.

I said it when he was signed. Matt Kalil will keep us from re-signing a key FA of ours.

    • if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying
    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
