2018 Carolina Panthers draft summary - Reasonable Expectations

I think this is fairly accurate. Although I think Gaulden could surprise some people and play a bigger role than what is stated here.

A lot of people don’t realize Gaulden didn’t have a coach in college. He played under Botch Jones, who couldn’t develop a football player if his life depended on it.

I think Jackson will start from day one...he will okay both inside and outside (matching up against the other team’s speed guy)

Gaulden won’t start opening day...but I expect him to take that job by mid season

Haynes will be in the 53 man Roster and play special teams and as a joker in pass rushing sub packages...sometimes with his hand in the dirt and sometimes standing up from a LB position

Cam is going to love D.J. Moore and i think he has a huge year

Ian Thomas will be the #2 TE from the start

Like every site I have read, I really like this draft...almost every one (cbs, nfl, si, etc) gave us a grade of A

DGs draft classes were notoriously small.  As a result, almost all of our draft picks made the team in recent years.

This year we have 8 drafted players. First time since 2011.

How was Hurney in the past? Was he willing to cut draftees and/or send them to PS?

I don't get why you're saying that the Panthers ignored more glaring needs to take Jackson. Cornerback was arguably the most glaring need we had when he was drafted, and the nickel is just as important as any in the secondary, the way that teams are attacking in the passing game these days.

It's like we didn't draft who the team wanted we needed the players we got and they're all getting pretty high marks in return.

I would have went Oliver in the 2nd. I would have moved up in the third to get Reid. I hope this works out though

Why if your game plan was to get better and faster and you had both players rated the same. We got what seems to be the better player for our current team structure.

Doesn’t that say something bad about him and scouting? Almost like he slept during all but one pro-day. I found it really weird that we seemed to pass over guys we had in for visits (like Sweat or Reid) and hoped they fell later and then reached/traded up (Gauden/Haynes) when they didn’t. I think Hurney outsmarted himself again thinking that he’d get grilled for trading up and then missed out on guys we liked due to not knowing how far they’d fall.

Or or maybe we didn't want that player after scouting and meeting with him we decided Gaulden can come in and play and produce we needed DJ more than we needed Reid to be a successful unit.

Man it's bad when the media is giving us A's left and right for our draft class but everyone in here including Igo says it was terrible. I have to disagree I thought he did very well with these picks. Got Cam another weapon finally and upgraded defense. That's what everyone wanted and still complain. Like I said this site has turned into a bunch of whinny ass women.

I feel like we got impact players all up and down the draft. Mel kiper(just an example) was raving about the MD LB two time captain fast tackling machine who shined on tape. Said he gave Connor Williams first round draft pick THAT work lined up as a de in attacking situations. His tape says he gets sacks and makes plays and is a tackling machine who we got in the fifth but we don't want him lol.

Last thing ok let's be very logical Ron doesn't value a safety per say because they're interchangeable and the way we want to attack which we all know is whoever is the down safety let's say may blitz or have to cover the TE while someone else blitzes Gaulden checks all those boxes. I feel like Some Huddlers would be estatic if we would have drafted Bates. But he's not a good fit for us his thin lean frame weighing barely 200 pounds man stop with the bs. We needed that aggressive DOG who creates turnovers.

I think  Ian Thomas will surprise us.  He is more of a blocker than Manhurts filling the role of Dickson .  I am also pleased with CB pick .  it will light a fire in training camp for those whose job is on the line.  i hope we bring in Ricky Proel's son for a look at wr . i know its crowded, but you never know.  ( sorry about the spelling)

Austin Proehl was drafted by the Buffalo Bills. Blake Proehl will be in his 2nd year at ECU. He didn't play last year because he tore his ACL in his first practice.

The more I look at our picks, let the dust settle, etc - I absolutely hate all of the picks except for Moore.

I really, really dislike the Gaulden and Ian Thomas picks. A DB who doesn’t really have a position and a TE who is a project and didn’t do poo in college. fuging hurney

Hurney didn’t trade next years 1st

Hurney didn’t draft a small school player

Hurney stuck to big-time football conferences

Hurney addressed need while still taking the consensus best players on the board (other than Gaulden but I think that’s debated). Imo Jackson was the BPA at his pick for positions that were in the running.

It’s not saying much but this is Hurneys best draft.

2001 was his best one for sure, unless you dont count that one since he technically wasnt gm. in that case, 2007 with kalil, davis and johnson were since these guys are unproven

I'm so glad Hurney has given us plenty of stuff to argue about this summer until camp starts.

I love the draft.  It's a long, drawn out, overly melodramatic saga where everyone can feel great and/or horrible about it.

I'm really happy with Rounds 1-4, the LBs are kind of odd, and I do like our 7th round DT.  It SEEMS like we have gotten better, which is the way most teams feel at this point.

Now it's up to the coaches.  The coaches have to do their job and get these guys to play well.  Now what is reasonable?

1. Moore should be productive with some big plays and some mistakes.

2.  Our pass D should get better.

3.  The rest will find roles and over all, the team will be better.

Anything short of the playoffs is a failure, but I want to be winning a Super Bowl.  I think we're all in that same boat.

You are the first person I've seen that has not liked the Thomas pick. Every other article/post I have read has loved the pick. He is a project that has 3 years to learn under one of the best to play the game. No one expects him to come in and get 1,000 yds receiving the first year.

Can u link some examples of articles praising the pick of a TE with 28 career receptions? Not to mention he is now the de facto 2 string TE and could become starter at any moment if 88 goes down again.

This draft screams vintage Marty and proves to me that he didn’t learn his lesson. Hopefully his days as GM are numbered.

What TE did you want at that point in the draft?

I had better things to do on Saturday than watch the middle rounds of the NFL draft. LOL. I’d have to look at the board and see what players and what positions were still available. The point of my post was there had to be a better pick than a project in the 4th round.

I will say this about the offense. The difference between last year and this year is speed. Cam can now make teams respect his long ball and that should open up CMC.

    • Lol, good one. Rod will never let Necas Play center
    • All I can say is... I have some happiness off the rags choking and losing to the Panthers. Hopefully the Western conference team wins the Stanley cup, but now I can be 100% uninvested in the playoffs
