The quarterback plan for tonight

Panthers Coach Ron Rivera hopes to get one good series out of quarterback Cam Newton tonight against Buffalo in his preseason debut of Norv Turner's offense. Then the goal is to get Garrett Gilbert in with the first team to see where he stands as he battles Taylor Heinicke for the backup job that has been Derek Anderson's since Newton entered the league in 2011.

Kyle Allen isn't mentioned as being in the mix, but it's worth noting that Heineke was an interception machine in practice recently.

I can't remember who I was talking to that told me Heineke was the one to watch.

Heineke did nothing the 4 days I was at TC to make me think he even has a shot at the 53 man roster.

I'll be shocked of Cam plays more than one series. I won't be surprised if he hardly throws a pass. Maybe a screen or a check down or two. Call it a night.

That's what I'd do.

Might be what Rivera does. We'll see soon enough.

    • Does this mean only topics from within the last year or any topics with posts from the last year? i.e. if there are any old threads we feel should be kept around for whatever reasons, would a bump of that thread before the update ensure it's kept around in full or do the posts from more than a year old still disappear?
    • I'm more intrigued at him becoming our future LG. There were some people who thought he was better suited to be a guard in the NFL to begin with.  Then if Freeling ends up being a legit LT, moving Ickey to LG could give us an incredibly strong left side of our OL for years to come. Ickey has only played on the Left side his whole career, both in college and the NFL, so I just wonder if keeping him on the left side, even if shifting inside, would be better than putting him outside on the right side. Just hoping him growing up a Panthers fan will make him want to stay here and move positions than enter FA so he can stay at LT somewhere else, particularly since LT is the big money position on the OL, so he likely can get paid more by someone else to play LT than play LG or RT here for us.
