Offensive line Combos

Before the game it was reported that Mahon was to get the start at LG, but that actually ended up going to Van Roten.

Here are the combo's I noticed throughout the game. From Left to Right. Substitutions are in bold.

1st string: Kalil,Van Roten, Larsen, Turner, Moton.                 That combo played 2 series with Cam.

2nd string: Clausell,Mahon,Larsen,Van Roten, Moton            This was the lineup for Gilberts first series.

2nd string 2.0: Clausell, Hearn, Van Roten, Mahon, Motorn.     This was the line up for Gilberts 2nd series.

2nd string 3.0 : Clausell, Hearn, Friend, Mahon, Bisnowaty     This was the line for Gilberts 3rd and final series.

3rd string: Clausell, Mahon, Friend,Price, Bisnotway.               This was the final combo I paid attrention to and played on Heinicke's first drive.

 

Very small sample size to work with but I must say Van Roten filled in pretty well at both guard spots and even Center. So if Larsen does not slide to guard when R. Kalil comes back I'd suspect Van Roten is the favorite to win the job as of now.  Hearn and Mahon do not appear ready yet to take on that role. 

Also feel like its worth noting on the first string line, even with Van Roten and Moton having to step in and replace starters, I still think Matt Kalil is our biggest liability in pass protection.

Lastly, did anyone notice if Jeremiah Sirles played at all? I thought he was going to be a key depth piece but have not heard his name mentioned all camp and don't recall seeing him play last night

Good take on the line play last night. There was a lot of rotation going on, but they did well as a whole last night. I was most pleased with the way our first stringers went against their first string. Buffalo is really strong up front and we withstood what they threw at us.

Moton and Van Roten did really well and I could see both of them sliding in and holding up this season. Matt Kalil wasn't the best out there, but with one near sack, the rest of his time looked pretty decent... not great, but decent. 

I think basic play calling aided them a lot, and the speed at which the offense set up and moved was refreshing. That has to help the O-line immensely. Still, I want to see how they do with Ryan Kalil out there calling out the protection and solidifying the group. Larsen seemed to do a decent job, but Ryan K. is one of the best at it in the game.

Re: Sirles, I think I saw something from Voth that he tweaked something and didn't play as a precaution.

IIRC Van Roten was decent during spot duty last year.  We'll throw enough poo at the wall to stick at Guard, but just gotta pray for no injuries at OT....or that we find an upgrade sitting out there. 

 

Don't know how much he has left in the tank (recent Pro Bowls, though), but Donald Penn might be on the trading block in Oakland. If I'm Hurney, that's a move I might make.

I like Van Roten and Larsen very much as depth, and feel like they both have done pretty decent when they have to play. I know some would like to see Larsen get the starting center job next year, but we were much better when Ryan played.

I know he can improve with more playing time, but I'm glad we signed him.  Right now next year is a good year  for centers.  I like the idea of Larsen on the team at  the money we spent, but would like to draft better.

We were much better in what way? Speaking  purely from offensive stats our results were pretty similar with a slight advantage toward Larsen in most categories. I think people are largely just parroting this line because they want to believe it.

just going off what I remembered, didn't look at any stats.  Easy for me to say I feel better about our All Pro center being in there vs an undrafted free agent, but I thought Larsen was acceptable.  Seems I remember something about us moving the ball better when Ryan got back, but I may be wrong.

Van Roten did a good job besides the first play of the game.  

Moton was outstanding.  I didn't think that there was that much of a separation when Williams won the job last year.  And it bodes well for a cheaper RT for several years to come if Williams leaves.  

Bisnowaty played well.  Still a little shacky on a couple of plays but he just joined the team.  I remember watching film on him when I was trying to watch Dorian Johnson at Pitt.  Great pick up.  

And in blocking in general family it was nice to see a FB and some 2 TE sets to help the line.  Damn I like Norv.  The quick execution of passes will help our line. 

Unfortunately did not key in to watch Mahon as much as I wanted.  But Hearn needs some work.

The Dolphins weren't good but he manhandled them and was carving room for CAP that game.

      Then if he needs time to grow up and he is going to sign an extension in needs to be a 3 year, 20m AAV. He doesn't deserve to get paid like a top 10 QB right now because he's not. Daniel Jones is getting 14m and is playing top notch football.  He may have had some better games, but his mechanics and footwork are still terrible when he feels any pressure, real or not. When he feels good, he steps into his throws like he should. When he doesn't, it's that body squared up or jumping arm toss or tip toe lob. His fumbling is a huge problem. He cant run QB sneaks. He cant really play from under center because his drop backs are terrible and he needs to be far back to get enough gapping to see the field. That's not top 10 QB contract worthy.  And let's not pretend that Bryce is some victim in all of this. Remember him packing on 20 lbs before the combine for the weigh in and walking around in a hoodie the entire time or practicing that S2 test that no one has mentioned before or since so he'd have better results, or riding that hype train like the wheels weren't ever going to fall off. Stroud got roasted and torn apart because of a "leaked" S2 result. He was being portrayed as an idiot while Bryce was being portrayed as a savant. All Stroud ever said was watch me play football. He proved his point.  Bryce did everything he could to make himself the number 1 overall pick and when that happens, guess where you're going? To a bad team, likely with a new coach and it's probably going to be full of dysfunction especially if the owner is Dave Tepper. But the real dysfunction came because Bryce wasn't Reich's choice for QB. He wanted Stroud because Stroud fit the type of offense he ran better than Bryce ever could. That's why he lost interest as soon as he was drafted. He was forced to play Bryce when it was obvious he wasn't ready to show off Tepper's shiny new draft pick. No HC is going to come to a team when he gets no choice over who he has as a QB to build around and he has to reinvent the wheel when the easiest thing to do was just buy the wheel that fit to begin with. Tepper lied to Reich all the way up until draft day, then he made that pick. Then Reich checked out, and i don't blame him one bit. And I'll be clear, I didn't want Reich. I wanted Steichen because of what he's doing in Indy or Ryans because I thought he would make one hell of a leader and HC.  Reich was a HC with no control over his own team. I put the majority of what's gone wrong involving Bryce on Tepper. The trade gave up too much in picks and DJ to build around him, we had a horrid GM who couldn't draft or build a roster, a QB forced to play before he's ready, an owner that thinks he knows more than football people.    There's a lot of moving pieces in all of this, but we cant pay Bryce 50m AAV at the end of this season while he figures it out, and the 5th year doesnt make sense either if we're a run heavy offense with Bryce as game manager. You dont need a 30m, 5th year option QB for that. If he's not there developmentally, he's not there.  Unfortunately, there isnt time to just calm down. He plays like a game manager this year and we have to move on. You dont give game managers huge contracts behind the highest paid oline in football, especially when you need to sign your LT. Any journeyman can give us Bryce level results for 15m less per year. Just the way it is. If there was more time, maybe. Unfortunately there isn't. Just the way it is.

      We’ve had opportunities to take 2 of the top 5 Cs in the game and instead we took TMJ and Johnathan Brooks. Our drafts since 2017 have been 1 player per draft and then huge misses on lots of really good NFL players (who the huddle have talk about in the draft threads). It’s been mentioned here so many times to draft more OL once you get to the 2nd and beyond since C/G talent is top tier in day 2 and lots of surprise day 3 guys. Taking Brooks over Frazier just looks worse and worse as our OL helps Chuba and Rico look great and Frazier would be a large improvement over Mays.
