sweet jesus on a stick, i can't believe what i'm watching. we've seen strands of it for the past couple of weeks in spite of poor line play, but the difference turner has made has never been more clear than in this game.

play calls coming in with loads of time on the clock. cam's footwork looks good. guys getting schemed open. divergent route trees.

everything that was wrong with shula's offense appears to have reversed with the installation of turner's. i've never felt so good after a series of stalled drives.

shula was dog doo but he's been sprayed off the soles of our new balances and we look fresh as fug.

We been running cheap knockoffs of Turners playbook ever since Rivera arrived.  Chud brought in a variation of it and Shula largely kept a lot of it when Chud left.

It's funny when you think about it, but technically this is the same offensive scheme we've been running pretty much since Ron Rivera took charge. It really shouldn't look any different.

But Phil is right. It looks significantly different.

Me and Dale Earnhardt Jr could drive the same car, but my guess is if you saw each of us, you'd notice the difference.

Yea turns out Shula really is a POS/worst OC in the history of sports and we were right this whole time....who fugin knew?

Oh? everyone(cept Rivera). This is both a good and a bad thing.

Shows Rivera is also the slow to change stubborn moron we all know he is and that we finally made the move even if several years too late. Wasted SB appearance/playoff run last year with turd OC and you can't make up time but still is good to finally have a pro level OC.

Yeah, this isn't one of those "hindsight is 20-20" things either. Literally everybody and their mom knew just how bad Shula was......................except Ron.

I've always said, Ron's stubbornness is what is going to get him fired. He held onto Shula WAY too long, long enough to cost us a superbowl ring. We're lucky we got new ownership or else we would have had to put up with that sh*t for another 3 years. Let's also be thankful (as bad as that sounds) that Amini and Kalil got hurt, or else we would legit be rolling into the season with both of them as our starters :poison:

i dunno i should probably make a thread for this because the shula arc is way more complicated than people give it credit for. like ron had a lot more considerations than people on here think about. we see 16 games a year, but underneath all that is a massive organization that rivera's in charge of and all the accompanying horse poo that goes with it.

there was never just one reason shula was the offensive coordinator. like when he was first promoted, ron was looking over his shoulder and making sure he wouldn't be knifed by a coordinator. but then even though shula was fairly incompetent at the finer elements, the results in 2013 and 2015 weren't bad enough to fire him. 2014 had an obvious injury excuse built in.

shula also shared ron's philosophy about the offense acting to the benefit of the defense. you're not going to find many offensive coordinators any more who think "yeah our main goal is to keep the defense rested."

but most importantly shula was an absolute pro at office politics. Richardson loved him. Shula would always go out of his way to talk shop with richardson, and jerry would tell war stories about his dad and poo like that. Certain players (Thomas Davis specifically) figured that out with Jerry. TD got Gettleman fired if that gives you any idea of how powerful he is.

I think finally moving on from Shula was a couple of things for Ron. For one, it sent a message to the new owner that Rivera was amenable to new philosophies. Richardson's main intent was stability, and keeping a "family" like atmosphere. this is one of the reasons Rivera promoted Shula: keeping it in house and keeping the owner happy. And in a way, firing Shula did the same thing for the new owner.

I also clearly remember that the proprietor of this here joint, @Jeremy Igo, questioned the promotion of Shula from the start.  (I remember because I agreed with him 100%.)

I mean, at that time, Shula's track record as a coordinator could only have been charitably described as "pedestrian" and that's trying to be polite about it.

I remember thinking Shula over Hue Jackson was odd, but given what we know of Jackson's personality, he was never going to work with Rivera.

Shurmur was more of a mystery. I didn't like the idea of trying to transition into a West Coast system, but Shurmur and Rivera had a history and he'd been successful. Obviously now he's been even more successful.

Igo has also confirmed that Shula was a Richardson favorite before. So his promotion being political wouldn't exactly be all that shocking. Especially so given that he wasn't let go until Richardson was on his way out the door.

    • The same folks crying about the OL right now were crying about it in 2023 too. We have tied up over 100 million dollars in two interior olinemen alone and we have Taylor Moton inked to a recent extension. We've invested multiple first and second round picks in the offense. We hired an offensive minded head coach. This is an offensive team. The offense needs to produce or people need to be replaced.
    • This is the same place that has ridiculed and blasted Caleb Williams at every opportunity he has his team sitting at 10-4 in the same NFC that the Panthers are competing in. And their division in the NFC North is as or more competitive as our division. Yet from the same people who have very high standards for Williams we get every excuse imaginable for the smallest starting QB in the league even when he and his team continue to disappoint when the pressure is on. You lot aren't any less inconsistent than anyone else.
    • The Panthers are 9th in cap spent on offense this year.  However next season is already a different story  The Panthers as it stands right now will be 18th in cap spent on offense and 8th in cap spent on defense  The Panthers are currently set to spend more on defense next year than they are on offense this season Guys like Jaycee and Moehrig cap numbers take a big jump. Wharton has a massive cap hit   Jaycee Moehrig and Wharton in 2025 The same 3 in 2026 So this same defense as it stands right now will cost more in 2026 than this offense does right now… Got anything else you want to try?
